I think that "wishy washy" jangle is the key. It's not a particularly aggressive album, and it's not meant to be. The songs almost don't matter. It's the sound. Here's one I don't quite "get": Some of the lyrics are good (and some are questioable, and some are awful), but what really turns me off is the music (or lack thereof). I don't mind people speaking through songs, but an entire album is a bit much, especially when they sound like they're reading from cue cards at four in the morning.

The melodies of You Never Give Me Your Money, Because, The End, and Carry That Weight are heavenly. That's about the most praise I can muster for that album.
As far as I Want You goes, Elvis Costello took the title and a bit of the tune and made a much greater song.

That was a simplified post of appraisal and you know it. Abbey Road is nowhere as technically briiliant as Sgt.Peppers but Abbey Road is a warmer and more complete album to listen to. I have'nt listened to both albums for a while now and think they are BOTH over rated.

As opposed to the rest of the stuff they've made or pop-punk in general?

I don't like any of that Genre at all. It also encroaches on my beloved Ska music too. It's basically Pop music with guitars. I like lots of Pop music but not when it's pretending to be non mainstream. The whole ethos of Punk was not to be polished and well produced. Kind of defeats the purpose. I can handle a few Offspring tracks but not much else from the genre.

Maybe you should head over to the Pop-punk hate thread...
I don't see much point in naming albums from a genre you don't listen to. Of course you're not going to like it, there's nothing anyone can say to make you change your mind (which is I suppose the point of the thread).

The thread is asking why people like certain albums that have sold well or are popular and we just don't understand why. I will concede though that Green Day could be a lot of young kids first steps onto the musical ladder so there is a nostalgia factor there.
