'Bluish' is one of my favorites. :)

Or really any QOTSA album for that matter.

Riffs drilled into you, Josh Homme is also a very underrated lyricist IMO.

One that's always puzzled me:

All I heard of this album was bland and boring.. Can anyone shed any light on why people think this is a great album?

R.E.M. is one of those bands I decided I'd never like (and how wrong I was). I'll spare you the spiel about Murmur's influence and its classic status, and simply say that it really requires repeated listening. I thought the same thing as you when I approached it for the first time... compared to other music of the time and all its bells and whistles, Murmur seemed a little tame, flat, plain and certainly out of place. But having listened to it many times since, it's an album I now adore for its ingenuous bittersweet sound. It's the kind of album that makes you feel nostalgic even though it was around long before you were born... at the very least it puts me in a reflective mood.

Repeated listens do pay off with a lot of albums, I've only listened to this about 4 times. Maybe it needs a few more, what's the lyric content of it? Why's it got such a classy status? It's pretty much cited as a perfect album, 10/10 - and I just don't hear it. Then again not many of R.E.M's albums really do it for me. Bittersweet sound? All I really heard was boring and repetitive :(

I just find it boring just the same as you don't rate Animals.
Both respective albums are our personal favourites but the difference is that it doesn't bother me in the slightest that you are not a huge Animals fan, it's all about opinions and I respect yours and have not started a debate about your dislike of the album.

The simple fact is that I have known that album (DSOTM) for 20 years now and it doesn't stimulate me anymore. I rarely play it. Doesn't mean that I think it's awful. I just rarely listen to it and prefer other albums.

Actually Animals has grown on me a lot, though I never disliked it at any point in time. It's indeed a great album.

I rank the work of Floyd like so.

Top tier/genius:
DSOTM
WYWH
Meddle
The Wall
Piper
Animals

High tier/very good:
Obscured by Clouds
Saucerful of Secrets
Division Bell

Mid tier/decent, some moments of glory:
More
Atom Heart Mother
Momentary Lapse of Reason

Low tier/meh:
The Final Cut

Bottom tier/terrible:
Ummagumma (studio half)

This. I don't hear what everyone else hears. I just don't get the big deal, though I haven't heard it in a couple of months or so. I may listen again tomorrow to give it a fairer chance.

I love that album, I've checked out other stuff from the band that was good but nothing touched this, it's just great, proggy pop rock. The production is great and the only song I don't really like is Chupacabras. IMO one of the best rock albums of the 90s.

I dig a few choice songs (Chupacabras, the welsh tune), but that's about it really.

I have another one, it's alright but I don't get how people rate it so highly
