The thing is, I've never REALLY been able to put my finger on it, though I do think the length of the songs do play a massive part. Maybe the experimental nature plays a part, but I don't see why.. Experimental is usually good, unless the experiment doesn't work out

Don't feel bad. I've been trying to get outside of the small niche of prog that I actually like, mainly Yes, Rush, and Pink Floyd, and get into some more stuff from the genre, but I'm finding a lot of the cliche pitfalls in both modern and classic prog rather annoying.

Hmm...well I'm not sure then. Maybe its the fact that being experimental tends to lessen the emotional impact of a lot of the music? If that's the case, though, I would think you could get into early Genesis. I always felt Peter Gabriel put a lot of emotion into their songs.

Meh...oh well, you can't like everything. Respect for giving it a chance though.

Are Rush classed as progressive rock? Really? I just thought they were straight up rock and roll. Never really minded rush, but I'm not into them either.

I've always found progressive rock a bit pretentious and boring, but I'm sure many will be quick to question my view and put me right. Just can't help having that feeling though.. At least I'm not the only one who is having trouble with this genre.

My thought process was, progressive rock.. hm okay, let's try it. Then.. progressive rock is the devil. And now I'm like well maybe it's not all bad..

And a band like Pink Floyd could've been that exception, because they're one of the best/famous prog rock bands there is but I just don't find them and the genre enjoyable at all. Can't stand Genesis, don't like King Crimson and I'm not 'avin Tool either..

So yeah, maybe it's just prog rock I really don't enjoy. But I don't like admitting I can't stand an entire genre (unless it's Hip-Hop.) I wanted to find some exceptions

Check out the next couple of Rush reviews I am about to write...if you don't like anything off Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures, then yeah just don't even worry about prog anymore.

Though those two albums are hardly progressive, in my opinion.

Maybe you could give Krautrock as try, seeing as it'd basically prog rock only more rhythm based and has less of prog rock's annoying cliches.

Give Neu 75 a listen to start you off and see what you think.

The closest thing to prog I can dig is stuff like Primus and Tool, but even with those bands I prefer the shorter songs and don't like it as much when they "jam it out"...
