Obviously that's not the only reason someone wouldn't like something, but it can play a big role.
Spot on, however I believe if an album is good, after a bit of time dedicated to getting into the album, the not being around at the time factor can fade IF the album is actually decent. A few of my favourite albums, at first I just branded them as meh, until I really dug deeper.

When I have a discussion about an album I dislike or don't get, I always hope people who can see something in the album give me an insight, make me see things I didn't previously see.

I always thought the first two albums by the Jam to be nothing very special but I`m a big fan of "All Mod Cons" "Setting Sons" and "Sound Affects" Agreed, their final album "The Gift" was poor.

I like two songs on their debut, and that's it.
21st Century Schizoid Man is one of the best songs ever, though.

I've listened to a couple of other Crimson albums, and I really didn't like any of them.
Red was kind of annoying actually.

Don't hate me for it but...I don't like Johnny Cash. Although he writes good songs I never like it when he sings them by himself. Not really fond of country in general anyway. Same goes for Leonard Cohen. Love "Hallelujah" just not by him. Jeff Buckley's version is absolutely brilliant.
Plenty of other bands that I just don't seem to "get": Animal Collective, Vampire Weekend, The XX. What's all the fuzz about?

Apart from 'Die Slow' the rest of this album sounds pointless. So wtf?

It's the album art. Who doesn't love plant cells?
