I don't think Dream Theater have a particularly mainstream sound, and IMO their music is original. They may, as you say, borrow a few ideas from 70s bands, but all musicians are influenced by bands they enjoy listening to.

And Urban, I completely disagree with the point you're trying to make, but nice analogy.

I suppose I feel they same way about rap and wannabe G-Units. But I find it silly to hate a band based on who likes them. Especially when they're a good band in the first place. If the teeny boppers got into DT would you part your ways with that band too?

Of course not, 'cause DT are good, but I'd be pissed off if they just saw it as just a fad and didn't appreciate the music. Which would most likely be the case but I'd still like DT. Like I said I also hate Tool's and Volta's music as well.

This is just plain wrong. I'm aware of your opinion but it just doesn't sit with me at all. I mean how can anyone say DT aren't original if you've heard like at least three of their albums? You've gotta either be insane or developed your irrational opinion after hearing like one album and then went: "Man I hate the singing and I'm cooler if I listen to Tool because to me they're more original." Please go and at least download all of their albums then come back to me.

PS: DT are extremely popular for a prog-metal band. They're numero uno.

Also, i have heard a lot of metal bands who have sounded like Dream Theater before them...I have heard most of their albums, some of their 90s material was decent, but Octavarium and Train Of Thought were downright crap IMO.

DT are in many ways, Rush with a fulltime keyboardist and a worse singer and noticably worse lyrics (imagine that).

And add the fact that Rush had such talent in all instruments....Neil Peart one of the best drummers ever in technical skill....geddy lee can shred on the bass like none other while singing....and alex is a very under-rated guitarist....everything about *** theater is over-rated...minus maybe the fact that petrucci is a very talented guitarist

But then you have Petrucci, who's hailed as one of the greatest modern guitarists. Then you have the drum god Portnoy whom everyone worships not just because of his drumming but because of his adept song writing and lyrics. Then you have one of the most underrated bassists ever, Myung. All you have to do is watch the L@B DVD and watch the Dance of Eternity section towards the end of "Instrumedly." That'd make any proficient bass player want to burn their instrument in a ten hour ritual. And last but not least, Mr. LaBrie. Some don't like his tonal colour but you can't argue with the fact that his expressiveness and his range is just phenomenal. Probably my favourite singer ever.
And I don't even think Rush are overrated because I don't even rate them at all. It's laughable comparing their talent to DT's.
