For everyone who voted Tool, I don't think you considered the fact that Led Zeppelin had a huge influence on Tool, which really the only bigger influence is King Crimson.

All of these bands are good... except I haven't heard Art Brut, but they're probably decent too. I voted for Tool. Zeppelin and Beefheart were seriously close.

Actually, I did realize that. I think Tool's greatest accomplishment was finding something in Led Zeppelin's turgid epics worth keeping.

How is Art Brut pretentious? Because they have a song that goes "I can't stand the sound of the Velvet Underground?" Compared to The Velvet Underground Art Brut is about as far from pretentiousness as you can get.

because art brut is a reference to the modernist ideas of dubuffet and andre breton who believed that the "outsider art" of people such as children and mental patients was more pure because it was untouched by the ideas or influences of artistic history that most artists seek to overcome. basically they paraded the primitive and unstructured art of non-artists as being more pure than real art. art brut use this basically just to alude to their lack of songwriting skills. they don't do anything particularly original or primitivist, and obviously are hipsters with record collections since they're namedropping velvet underground. basically their lack of interesting songs and their high-brow allusions lead me to dub them PRETENTIOUS DRIVEL
