Talk Talk
A band that started out as a pop band (and I would say a good one at that) to creating an early post rock classic with Spirit Of Eden album. Mark Hollis tortured vocals dominated their sound and it was himself and Friese Greene (their producer and later keyboard player) who wrote everything and dominated the band later in their career. This track from earlier in their career (1984) and can be seen as fairly average but I love their early stuff too.
This track is from their later period and is probably the most commercial track on the album that encompasses pop, rock, ambient and Jazz. their music can be seen as depressing, but I think there is a beautiful honesty in their music, and Spirit Of Eden (1988) is a lost classic. |
They probably had one of the greatest 3 album runs ever with The Colour of Spring/Spirit of Eden/Laughing Stock.

I agree, yet they are never mentioned enough as a highly original and influential band.

Spirit of Eden = great
Laughing Stock = stunning haven't heard any of the previous albums, although my mother liked their pop stuff. |
The Colour Of Spring Was a crossover album if you will, but nothing was intentional with them. It is my favourite TT album in all honesty.

had never heard Talk Talk before, i am now officially intrigued. there were alot of really experimental songwriters fronting pop groups in the 80's...i still don't understand exactly why the world suddenly turned to reverby drums and that recorded-in-an-echo-chamber sound though

I loved this album in the early 80s...
http://www.angelfire.com/psy/dmrpix/...smylife-lp.jpg I had a bit of a penchant for early Depeche Mode and synth / electro pop in general. Even though this album did really well, I still felt that they seemed a bit like outsiders - especially compared to other bands around at the time like Blancmange or OMD. I sort of felt that even then, they had a different path to follow and when The Colour Of Spring came out it certainly confirmed that there was whole other side to them. |
I am just listening to The Colour Of Spring. What a brilliantly written pop album. Introspective pop keeps this forum alive.

I forgot how good this track was until I was just playing an alternate version of it. Better than Radiohead? I think so. Expect a compilation up in the next few hours.:
