yea yea everyone always says they like the old stuff, you know before they "sold out". plus it was kind of obvious that the last line in that post about country and emo was just a joke.

In my experience it's the total opposite. It seems everytime I target a mainstream band for criticism I get the same three stock responses. 1. You're only slagging them off because they're popular & you're just trying to be cool showing off that you like obscure underground bands. 2. You don't know what you're talking about , they rock 3. They've sold *Insert number of millions of albums sold here* so they must be good. Number 2 of those is my favourite because even though i've listened to the music i'm criticising I still get told this , usually by people who don't listen to anywhere near the number of bands from different genres as I do. Now is that a snobbish attitude to have? I don't think so. I must have listened to approx 5000 - 6000 albums in my life from all genres. I also don't discriminate between major labels , indie labels or bands who put out stuff themselves. If I like it I like it , if I don't I don't.I don't do it for 'cool points'. I do it because I love doing it and because it's my passion and it'll take more than some irate U2 or Red Hot Chili Peppers fan to put me off doing so just because I slated the bland shit these bands produce on a regular basis. Basically if you have sound reasons and enough conviction you can justify listening to ANY band , even bad ones. And yes I listen to plenty. The only people who can't put up a convincing argument just resort to lazy tactics as seen above or use that perennial favourite "music is subjective anyway". In which case we all may as well pack up & go home now.

God please don't start this one up again for the 3,987,845th time.
My opinion has always been if a person has to trot out this turd of an answer to justify anything then it does make me wonder why they signed up to discuss & debate music in the first place. Quote:
I can give credit to music I don't like , at the same token everybody knows i'm the biggest Fall fanboy on this damn forum yet i've often called their Cerebral Caustic & Are You The Missing Winner albums total sh*t. And I think there are a lot more people on this forum who have that attitude than the original post gives credit to.

than have to defend the music they already like? I mean, what if someone forces me to defend my love for Big Black... they might say "its harsh, cold, abrasive and nihilistic and its amelodic just a load of noise." I would say sure (for the most part), but that's why I love them. Everything you say is true, but for you it makes them "bad" and for me it makes them "good." This argument should end. Music is subjective. Get over it. |

You never know , a band might take that originality and put their own twist on it that will make me like it. I don't happen to like the Velvet Underground that much however they influenced hundreds of bands that I do like , so I give them credit for that.
