Pink Floyd - Relics
Basically kicked off my obsessive collection of music. Pink Floyd was the first band I felt compelled to acquire their whole catalogue (up to The Final Cut anyway). I think Pink Floyd got me through half of my teens from about 12-15. Brian Eno - Discreet Music Heard this on a radio program by the same name (Discreet Music on 3PBS radio here in Melbourne). Remember lying in bed about 11 at night listening to this on my headphones. Still love Eno. Cosmic Psychos - Custom Credit I think this was about my first introduction to local pub rock/punk bands. This was more of a live music phase when I turned 18 and got a license and a **** box car to get around in and go to dingy Melbourne pubs to check out some great Aussie bands of the era like Cosmic Psychos, Vicious Circle, Meanies, Hard Ons. Suicidal Tendencies - Suicidal Tendencies First of the US punk stuff I got into. Probably a bit of a neglected category in my collection. As much as I loved it there wasn't much info at the time to find other bands. It was pretty hit and miss getting compilations and liking maybe one or two artists from an album. Bauhaus - Bela Lugosi's Dead This kind of marked the beginning of a goth phase which was more night club based than live venue. Cure, Joy Division, Smiths. Liked it at the time but hasn't really kept a place in my core rotation apart from Joy Division. Bob Marley - Survival Never really went beyond Bob Marley in the reggae front but I got most of his albums starting with this one. Funkadelic - Music For Your Mother This double Funkadelic compilation kicked off my love of funk. Who could blame me. Great stuff. Marvin Gaye - What's Going On This album moved me on to explore more of the soul side of funk. Got most of Marvin Gaye's albums and checked out many other soul artists when I exhausted his catalogue. Bonnie Prince Billy - I See a Darkness Heard the title track on Johnny Cash's American III - Solitary Man and the lyrics resonated with me so I found out who wrote them and got on to Bonnie Prince Billy. Got many of his albums but this is still my favourite. Started me off on a acoustic/folky tangent that I am still following. Nick Drake - Pink Moon Following on from the Bonnie Prince Billy I went back to chase down some earlier folk artists that may have passed me by starting with this album from Nick Drake. Nice stuff but I may have played it to death. I tend to gorge on my music until I never want to hear it again. There are plenty more in between but seeing it is 10 most important I will stop there. These are probably the milestones that marked a change in direction for me musically. Oh and honorable mentions to John Coltrane - Giant Steps, Radiohead - OK Computer, Dead Can Dance - Spleen and Ideal, Iggy and the Stooges - Raw Power, Lamb - Lamb, Neil Young - Harvest, Pearl Jam - Rearviewmirror (compilation), Sonic Youth - Goo, Tom Waits - Swordfishtrombones, Wes Montgomery Trio - Guitar On the Go. Hmmm...
Here they are in no particular order because I'm too lazy to sort them. Buckethead - Electric Tears My favorite album by the guy. Almost every song is worth listening to millions of times to me. Padmasana, Witches On The Heath, Angel Monster, All In The Waiting, Sketches of Spain, The Way To Heaven, Spell Of The Gypsies...etc. It's a masterpiece imo. Gotta love distortion. Jaïa - Blue Energy/Blue Synergy If I reallllly had to pick, this would probably be tied with Electric Tears as my 2 favorite albums. Maï Maï is my favorite non-Buckethead song of all time, and I love everything I've listened to on this album. Meditation, Spiritual Drops and Eternal Ices, Brainstorm, Breathing Ocean, Nasty Angel, and of course, After The Rain. Beautiful album. Can't wait for his new one. Eminem - The Slim Shady LP Eminem was one of my first rappers, and I still play this album a ton. While he's not very good anymore in my opinion, this album is perfect. My Fault, Brain Damage, *** On Everybody, Guilty Conscience, As The World Turns...it's great through and through. Buckethead - Shadows Between The Sky The album that really got me into Bucket. I love all the directions it goes in; from melancholy to bursting with joy to very deep. I listened to it all the way through last summer, and I still feel an overwhelming sense of happiness whenever I hear the title track. Cake - Motorcade of Generosity This album is just plain fun. I'm usually listening to Goa or Bucket, but whenever any song off this album comes on, I can't help but sing along. I'm seriously considering putting Mr. Mastodon Farm as my alarm clock song. Blink 182 - The Mark, Tom, And Travis Show Hey, don't make fun of me! :p It's a hilarious album and it features some of their best playing. I have some good memories attached to them. They sure know how to tell a joke. Eric Johnson - Ah Via Musicom My second favorite guitarist after Buckethead. I'm putting this on this list mainly for Cliffs Of Dover and Trademark. I haven't heard a bunch off the album because I'm too busy playing those songs over and over again. Sort of cheating, but whatever. Gotta say though, Desert Rose is a very good song... Hallucinogen - Twisted When I was someone new to Goa, I downloaded this. While I never have the patience to actually listen to the whole thing, there are quite a few tracks such as L.S.D that are just soooo good. Blink 182 - Take Off Your Pants And Jacket Mainly for the memories I have attached to this album. Has a few good replayable songs though, pretty angsty but come on. It's newer!Blink. Not their greatest album but still fun. Buckethead - Colma I honestly don't like this album as much as some of his others. But man; Whitewash, Wishing Well, For Mom, Watching The Boats With My Dad, Big Sur Moon, Lone Sal Bug...there are so many nice chill songs on here. I prefer Electric Tears, but it's still mighty beautiful. |

10. Alligator - The National
The first album that really got me into this band, my dad got it on one of his every 4 year album spree binges he used to do, and it was a huge standout for me, it was greatly instrumental in the change in my music taste going into high school. 9. The Sunset Tree - The Mountain Goats It was a really tough call between this one and Tallahassee, but I've had The Sunset Tree for a longer time and it did help me through more rough times. Not to mention it is an incredibly fantastic album. 8. The Creek Drank The Cradle - Iron & Wine It's the album that got me hugely into modern folk, which was and still is a huge part of my music taste right now. An absolutely beautiful album. 7. X/O - Elliott Smith Another one of my dad's pickups that I learned to love, I played this album to death in 9th and 10th grade, he was such a brilliant singer-songwriter who left us too soon, plus he was an influence on a lot of bands I love now. 6. Rubies - Destroyer This is not only one of my favorite albums of all time, but it actually has greatly impacted my life. It was the album that I used as a comparison on my college essay, it got me accepted into all the colleges I wanted and my love/listening/analysis of it brought me up to the next level. 5. Greetings From Michigan! - Sufjan Stevens It wasn't the first album I heard from him but it certainly became my favorite over time, the songs remind me of so many good and bad times. 4. Grand Ledge - Paul Baribeau Listening to this album to me was like listening to every thought I ever had and wanted to make into a song but couldn't...made into a song. 3. Tonight - Jason Anderson Mostly for two songs on it, but I love the whole album. July 4, 2004 and So Long hold so much personal significance now though. It always was a great album to listen to when I needed cheering up, or I needed to let loose frustrations. It was perfect. 2. Boys and Girls In America - The Hold Steady My username is Charlemagne...I can't not have a Hold Steady album really high on this list. They've been my favorite band for such a long time, I discovered so many of my favorite bands through them and Finn's lyrics are just fantastic. 1. Red Demo/Yellow Demo - Tegan and Sara While The Hold Steady are the most important band to me in terms of my musical tastes, Tegan and Sara are by far the most important band to me in terms of personal and emotional development. These demos were my go to albums to listen to whenever I was feeling depressed, hopeless, hurt etc. They never failed to make me feel better. I could have included so many more, but I'll stick to that.
