Here's my music history summed up so you can get a better perspective of where I'm coming from. For the first 14 years of my life, music was never a big part of my life. I didn't know any rock music, my local only played hip-hop and r&b. That all changed in 2004. The thing that really got me into music was a video game called Burnout 3. My god, I don't know why I bought the game, but it was pretty fun. The main thing that kept making me come back was the soundtrack. Almost every song on their was amazing. It was a revelation. I couldn't wait to get home from school to play it. A few songs that really hooked me in were:
1208 - Fall Apart Autopilot Off - Make A Sound Eighteen Vision - I Let Go (my first "soul song" as we called it) Funeral For A Friend - Rookie of the Year Jimmy Eat World - ...Just Tonight Rise Against - Paper Wings. Without that game, I don't know where I'd be. I owe it a lot. It is also why I passionately defend against those stupid people who belittle you because you found a song from a video game. But now, onto my Top 8 Most Important Albums (in no particular order, just numbered for organization, except #1) Mid-Edit: Cutting it down to 8 because I'm tired. 8. Opeth - Blackwater Park - The whole thing started when a friend of mine from Gamefaqs was doing a Challenge run of Final Fantasy Tactics. (my favorite game ever) Since the video was long, he used Bleak for the BGM. I played the video at least 10 times over the next couple of days. The song was sheer amazingness wrapped up in an epic 9 minute and 16 second package. The mood the song set you in from the very beginning, the vocals were just perfect in every way, and most importantly, the chorus. The chorus was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard. I cried from joy. I just had to show my friends. It was that good. There was only one problem: He didn't post the title of the song!! I checked the comments to no avail. I Pm'ed him for the song name. I even searched up "Devious movements" on Youtube to try to find it. I had never gone that out of my way to find a song. That's how epic that song was/is. The guy messaged back and recommended me get BWP. I did started listening to Funeral Portrait on the way home. I loved it and checked out the rest, but stopped when I got to The Drapery Falls. Not because it was bad. No. Because it was somehow ever better than Bleak. Holy God, the intro was so melodic and eargasmic, my head nearly exploded. Throughout the entire song, you're just entranced, but the last 5 minutes are probably the best thing Opeth has written or will ever write. This album is just amazing from start to finish, and really opened my eyes to longer songs and harsh vocals. Mikael still has IMO one of the best vocals in metal. 7. Avenged Sevenfold - City of Evil - This album, along with others, signifies my greatest summer ever. I got a summer job at PEMA and I'd basically ride with ticket officers and spot parking violations. That gave me a lot of time to listen to music. So I downloaded a bunch of music and I'd listen to them at work. Well, for a time A7X were my fav band. The music was catchy, guitars were awesome and I like M. Shadows voice. From the amazing dual acoustic solo in Sidewinder to the long ballad of Strength of the World, this album is good all around. 6. The Fall of Troy - Doppelganger - I still remember the day I heard Ex-Creations and The Dark Trail and I said it was screamo garbage. I was such a ****ing idiot. The Fall of Troy was the first band I ever liked and the only band whose entire discography I have. And it all started with Doppelganger. I used to listen to Ace One, Scene and I Just Got This Symphony Goin' on my way to school. The whole album is just filled with a lot of crazy unique stuff I'd never heard before. It has screaming and singing by only 1(2) person, crazy ass guitar that got me air guitaring and the best drumming I'd ever heard. Mouths Like Sidewinder Missiles was the perfect track and actually got one of my friends listening to TFOT as well. 5. Megadeth - Rust in Peace - Another album from that glorious summer. Man, is this album killer. It instantly got me hooked on (thrash) metal. Killer riffs are plentiful and fast heavy drumming that no headbanger can resist. It starts off with Holy Wars...The Punishment Due. The lyrics were very thought provoking, but it's was hard to concentrate with that riffs playing. It just absorbs all of your attention. Then Hangar 18, the classic Megadeth song with it's 18 or so relentless solos. Amazing from start to finish. Continuing where Hangar 18 left off, you got Take No Prisoners shredding your ****ing face off. A perfect mix of intense bass, guitars, drums and Dave Mustaine's vocals. Then it's slows down a bit with Five Magics. The eerie tone set by the bass drums and bass with the guitars playing over it. It gives the song a personality. Just when you think it's over, BAM!. A thrash explosion of epic proportions. The ending solos just get me so energized and it's my favorite song from this album. Lucretia and Poison Was the Cure great track just not that memorable, but that just sets you up for the masterpiece known a Tornado of Souls. This song has it all. The opening riffs, the epic solo, Mustaine's vocals are great and varied. Seriously, I don't care if you hate metal, you can't hate this song. Rust in Polaris is kind of repetitive, but man does that drum intro make up for that. This album is definitely worthy of its high praise. 4. Metallica - Kill 'Em All - Before I downloaded Metallica's first 3 albums, I'd only heard Enter Sandman. I hated the song, but people were comparing them to Megadeth so I had to give them a try . I was listening to songs on my Ipod on random when Jump in the Fire came on. I just remember hearing "Jump on the FIYA!" and thinking "Man, this has the attitude. Pretty badass". Then by some miracle the next song was Hit the Lights. It was more of the same. James had the attitude while Kirk provided the guitar to back up his ferocity. This album got me listening to 80's thrash metal. 3. Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast - The first time I ever heard these guys was on a Budokai 3 match. Aces High was playing and I instantly loved it. I played the outro riff so many times, it's imprinted into my brain. So when I had an opportunity to get an entire album, I didn't hesitate and it was love at first listen. Every track was unique and Bruce's really fits the song. Whether it was something like Hallowed Be Thy Name or Invaders. Although it's not my favorite anymore, it had the magic. 2.Pearl Jam - Ten - This is really the first not heavy album I really loved listening to. Eddie Vedder's is just so perfect. He can't sing the more aggressive songs like Once as well as the powerful songs like Black and Garden. No filler to be found here. Excellent from start to finish and it has Garden: The best song ever. I will never get tired of that beautiful guitar. Powerful stuff. Even Flow is amazing song and every song on this album just as impressive. This album is really just so perfect, it hurts me to see people call Pearl Jam bad. This is a contender for my favorite album ever. Honestly, nothing I can say will ever express how much I love this album. 1. Modest Mouse - Good News for People Who Love Bad - Oh God where do I start? Let's see, each and every song has its own memory. This album is what got me addicted to Modest Mouse. I love just about everything they've put out. Except Invisible. I hate the song with a passion. Every song is just so amazing, whether it be its meaning or the amazing sound. Even Modest Mouse itself has history with me. During a different summer job, I'd help my employers with computer but they'd be out at meetings and I'd finish my work early with nothing to do. I don't remember how or why, but, for some reason, I was on Youtube looking at high level Melee matches where I came across an amazing match: Mario vs Ganondorf. Mario down 3 lives to 1. Chips away at Ganons stock and finish him off with a 0-death combo that had my jaw on the floor. Not only did I rewatch it for the match, I also rewatched it because Dashboard was playing. For some reason people don't say what song they used. The whole summer I had Dashboard playing in my head. Now, whenever I heard Dashboard, I remember that summer. Me watching thousands of Melee matches on Youtube. Everyday On Smash World Forums learning everything I possibly could about the game. Modest Mouse is by far my favorite band. I hope they never stop making good music. It's my life dream to give Isaac Brock a great big hug. I'll conclude this by saying music has really changed my life. I am always looking for any types of new music. Right now, I'm looking for rock from the 70's and "indie" rock. Any album recommendations are greatly appreciated. (This took me forever to type, but it shows how important these are to me. I normally wouldn't even bother posting a paragraph.) |

these are my list
10 Orchestra Baobab- Bamba - The intensity and passion of this latin infused Senegalese group have never ceased to amaze me. This album feels like beach sand between your fingers and smells like a rich cigar.
9 Andrew Bird- Arm Chair Apocrypha - For a man playing every instrument and creating an entire band out of loops you'd be surprised by the superb depth and quality he creates. A true pioneer and an instant classic in my book. 8 A Tribe Called Quest- People's instinctive Travels - The quintessential essence of what hip hop was and always tries to get back to being. Q-tip, Fife, and Ali create some of the smoothest and most memorable music you will ever hear. 7 Modest Mouse- This is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About - This is the raw uncut alcoholic beauty of Modest Mouse. Every piece streams into the colorful muddy blur. Fluid but so tense at the same time. I can feel the hours meandering away when I start to listen to this. 6 Cat Power- You are Free - It's like listening to a suicide note. I'm really weird and I love the morbid and depressing power that this music has over me. One of the best works of music to listen to when your burnt out on life. 5 The Smashing Pumpkins- Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness - This always takes me back, the first album I ever fell in love with. The incredible range of styles and the vulnerability that Billy Corgan puts into this are phenomenal. 4 Latyrx - The Album - So creatively produced and bursting with explosive rhymes that you never notice the way that they sample from such selective sources. They redefined what rap could be when the dropped this. If they ever get together to make another album it undoubtedly be another masterpiece. 3 The Pixies- Surfer Rosa - Hearing Bone Machine and where is my mind takes me back to being a kid. The sporadic vocals and cutting guitar work make this a work of art that will never be forgotten for me. 2 Elliott Smith- Roman Candle - It always surprises me how stripped down and wonderful this album is. Elliott Smith is an experience that is only hampered by expensive production and can be fully enjoyed on this album from beginning to end. His lyrics are so poetically depressing that its hard to resist. 1) The Knife - Silent Shout Simply put, I could listen to this for the rest of my life. I've never heard such depth and power in an album. It's almost more of journey than anything else when I hear this. |

Pearl Jam - Ten
Queen - A Night at the Opera One of the best engineered albums I can imagine. Really fantastic all the way through. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon Speaking of well-produced albums. Nirvana - Unplugged in New York In which we hear the real Nirvana, covering Leadbelly, Vasolines, Bowie, and multiple Meat Puppets. The Streets - A Grand Don't Come For Free Original Pirate Material was like a shot in the arm. Grand is even better, in almost every way. Mike Skinner is an expert storyteller. Stevie Ray Vaughan - Texas Flood Hot. Justice - Cross Hot. Maybe not built to last, but this made me re-prioritize. The Beatles - Rubber Soul Van Halen - Van Halen Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik |

in no order:
Clutch-Pure Rock Fury the first album i bought from these guys, and what made them my favorite band. such a jamming feel throughout this album, plus the live version of Spacegrass is sooooo good Mastodon-Blood Mountain for me, there was so much to love about this cd, from the natural heaviness and qualities of old Mastodon, to the experimentation and new sounds on songs like "Bladecatcher", "This Mortal Soil", "Siberian Divide" and "Pendulous Skin". Between the Buried and Me-Colors yeah, you can read my review of this album to know the reason why i put it here Red Hot Chili Peppers-BloodSugarSexMagik imo a great bridge between old and new Chili Peppers, combining thier pure funk sound with their pop/rock sensibility Sublime-Sublime This is such a good album the whole way through. really shows the band at their best, musically and song wise. Megadeth-Rust in Peace definately Megadeth's best, musically wise. the songs rip through you in a barrage of guitars and Dave Mustaine's signature vocals take it home. Jimi Hendrix Experience-Axis: Bold as Love yeah, i did an album review on this one too, check it out Led Zeppelin-Houses of the Holy every track on here is nothig short of excellent, and as well as songs that are out of this world. a must have for any Zeppelin fan Frank Zappa-Apostrophe I absolutely love this cd. it has a pure myriad of instrumentation, humorous storytelling, and just pure rock Green Day-Dookie I bought this at Wal Mart (even though singer Billie Joe Armstrong said they don't sell their cds there), and within first listen i loved this album.

1. Are You Experienced? - Jimi Hendrix
This was the first good album I ever owned, my dad gave it to me when I was 13, a time when I was into all the MTV pop stuff. This record introduced me to the power of a distorted guitar. And thus my real interest in music started here. 2. Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd This was the album that got me into Floyd and eventually progressive rock. For the time, I listened to it at least once a day. This was before I realised how popular a record it actually was. So I know it's a cliche thing to say. But this record really did change my life. 3. Nevermind - Nirvana We all had the phase, and this was an important one for me. Nirvana was important during my angsty teenage years, and they were the first band that got me interested in alternative rock and through them I got into Pixies, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr and and the early hardcore bands. 4. In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson The first time I ever heard this band mentioned was when Robert Fripp made Rolling Stone's 100 greatest guitarists list, I didn't think much of it then. 21st Century Schizoid Man and the title track were the first songs I heard from this album and they had me hooked. IMO one of the few bands in existance where it's actually worth owning their entire discography. 5. Post - Bjork I don't get to talk about her much on this forum, so people probably don't realise just how big a fan of Bjork I really am. Back in the day I thought she was just another pop singer whose only claim to fame was her bizarre outfits and eccentric behavior. But I was very wrong. I remember watching the video for Pagan Poetry and that just blew me away, next thing I had to have a Bjork album, this was my first, and it's still my favorite. I can't really try to describe her music or why it appeals to me, it's just so out there. 6. Close to the Edge - Yes My interest in King Crimson and Yes grew around the same time. It was through these two bands that I learned what progressive rock was and it was through them that I got into other bands of the genre. My introduction to the band was through the 35th Anniversery collection. After that I downloaded this album. The title track is quite possibly my favorite song ever, it defines everything I love about prog. 7. Early Days and Latter Days - Led Zeppelin Ok, not REAL albums, but it was through these compilations that I found the Zep, I didn't listen to radio back then, so believe it or not all these songs were completely new to me. After this I bought their first 6 albums pretty much around the same time and I treasured each one, still do. 8. Ok Computer - Radiohead Blah blah, I can't really talk about this album without sounding like a pretentious hipster douche can I? Well once again, this was before I really realized how popular this band actually was. Those days were so great, I listened to this album every day and loved it. I know people say it's shallow to let people affect your musical tastes, and I TRY not to be that way, but I gotta be honest, since indie hipsters hyped this band into oblivion, it's hard to enjoy Radiohead nowadays without wincing a little bit, I don't even like to think about it. 9. Abbey Road - The Beatles Along with Revolver, this is the album that really got me into The Beatles. What else is there to say? 10. Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness - Smashing Pumpkins Boy do people love to sh*t on this album, but after ranting about how such people have damn near ruined Radiohead for me, that's probably for the best. I know Smashing Pumpkins appeals to angsty teenagers much like Nirvana and etc. I guess that's how my fascination with the band started out. But yeah this was my first SP album and it's still my favorite. This album combined heavy, angsty alt rock with bombastic pomp rock, which is probably why it was such a pivotal album for me, as it marks the point when my tastes were evolving from mainstream alt rock bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam to progressive rock. First double album I ever owned too. |

here's some albums, some of the more embarrasing choices I don't listen to anymore:
1. Dance Mix '93-had "humpin around" by bobby brown and "informer" by snow. me and my friends lip-synced informer for the third grade talent show. 2. Weird Al-bad hair day- first cd I bought 3. Nirvana-In Utero my older bro had a copy and I stopped listening to weird al. 4. Jimi Hendrix-axis:bold as love-when I was first learning how to play guitar, still one of my personal favorites 5. Korn-follow the leader-went back to listening to ****ty music 6.Nofx-liberal animation-first punk rock record I got 7. Dead Kennedys-give me convience or give me death-the second punk rock record-my mom got it for me for christmas 8. Cruci****s-our will be done- I lived in a small town so I had to order this through the one music store we had. I placed the order with some cool stoner and picked it up from his prudish mom at the store. 9. Joy Division-unknown pleasures- I was really depressed for a year. 10. Blue Cheer-vincebus eruptum- screw all the rest |
