For those of you who regarded George Martin as the 5th (or 6th??) member, Yellow Submarine is worth a listen - it's the soundtrack to their rather ethereal, animated motion picture.

George Martin contributed more to the music than The Beatles did actually.

The second half was music written completely by him, and The Beatles really had no involvement with it.

It was an awesome movie too, on DDD I edit a list of the all time greatest animated films and Yellow Submarine is #11.

I'm almost surprised to think I've never heard that argument before. Most of the background seemed unneccesary and the big red writing was just annoying but you've got a good point. Maybe it was John's songs that kick-started the band, although I'm not exactly clued up on early 1960's guitar bands and early Beatles is nowhere near as memorable to me as their work in the second half of the 60's.

I wouldn't even agree that his songs from the early years showed 'burning genius' but yes, you might be right that it was his songs that got them noticed and uber popular in the first place.

John Lennon was a great song writer but also a pretentious prick with his head up his arse. i dont know how lying in a bed is a form of protest and as for imagine an average song at best.

I like the Beatles but I never got on with the solo stuff they did. Especially Ringo's. You know what I'm talking about.

a lot of musicians have they're head up their ass. I thought it was to signify the whole stay at home and be yourself, screw going to work, be lazy if you want to type of thing. But i tend to interpret these things wrong.

I think he came off being more arrogant simply because they people who would interview him were biased, and mad that he wasn't the same guy he was in the beatles. And posing naked on photshoots didn't help

I personally listen to his solo stuff way more then i do the beatles.
