Default Musical catharsis

Watching the film THE FOUNTAIN today got me thinking regarding it's soundtrack. It is by Clint Mansell. Once of indie pop rockers POP WILL EAT ITSELF.The deftness and maturity on the soundtrack is stunning and if you asked me back in 1989 whether Clint would be doing this-the answer would definitely be NO!

Any other artists that are making completely different music to what they were originally doing, and being good at it?

Anyone who hangs in long enough I guess. I was fairly shocked the first time I found out that Elton john of candle in the wind fame wrote and preformed Crocodile rock.

Johnny Rotten going from the Sex Pistols to PiL has always
been one of my favorites, especially given the attitude shift
that goes with it. I mean, I've always thought of punks as
nihilistic hippies, and Rotten's change to me was just dropping
the hippy aspect.
