In Vain - Ænigma (2013) I remember saying back in 2010 when I reviewed Mantra that this band has the potential to be this decade's Opeth and I still stand by that statement. Grand sweeping song structures, loud/soft dynamics, elements of progressive rock and traditional folk music thrown in with a mixture of clean and guttural vocals. I definitely feel this album is perhaps their strongest, helped by the band ditching some of the oddly placed Southern blues arrangements from Mantra. If you're a fan of bands like Solefald, Borknagar, or Green Carnation you'll probably get something out of this, mostly because In Vain shares some of the same members as all the aforementioned bands. |

Albert Einstein by Alchemist + Prodigy (2013) My favorite hip hop album of year so far. Just really dig the beats on this; it sounds kind of unnerving in a way. Really great album |

PJ Harvey - Let England Shake (2011) Most of you guys were probably digging this album 2 years back but being fashionably late as ever I've just got round to it. Suffice to say it's good, maybe as good as the internet hype makes it out to be. It didn't sound anything like what I was expecting either. I got the impression PJ Harvey was some grizzled veteran singer songwriter in the mould of Bob Dylan or Nick Cave, but this album was far more indie-pop than what I had anticipated. (I hadn't listened to any of her stuff before) The songs were catchy and melody driven, didn't care much for the concept but the music was fun and I can see repeat listens on the horizon. |
Moderat's new release, II, is slaying me. A duo of superstars from the Berlin underground making really spaced out electronic music. IDM, but they use a drum machine to keep a beat in most songs, so it's also kind of deep housy.
