I thought Epic was a masterpiece, and this I think is really great. It's a grower for sure.

HOT- Squirrel Nut Zippers (1997)
Personally, I find this to be the best Swing album ever and I'm glad I'm revisiting lately. I rank this in my top 10 albums ever and if you like to move your body or daydream and leave your body this album is perfect. It's fun and well put together, its slow and fast at the same time and there is a loooot going on here. It make me feel as though I'm transported to the 1940's and it captures that essence perfectly. It also interestingly enough has a tropical feel to it thanks to the ukulele. The album went platinum and for good reason it is perfect. I recommend checking it out, you won't be disappointed.

V/A Enjoy the Experience : Homemade Records 1958-2004 Double disc collection of US private press recordings. Most of the songs featured were on albums of which less than 200 copies were issued. A wide variety of genres & styles: psych, garage, jazz, folk, lounge, exotica, funk, soul, country. I'd love to hear the complete albums of many of the artists here- most of the funk & psych tracks sound like lost Holy Grails. Yeah, there are some weird tracks that I could do without such as the lounge style Elton John medley or the disc 2 closer "Ah Music" which sounds like it came off a Dr. Demento radio show. But overall a killer comp and I'm hoping for a volume 2. |

The Microphones - The Glow Pt. 2 This is a good example of why I love sites like turntable and plug.dj - it's very likely I would never have heard this album had it not been for Pedestrian suggesting it to me after getting a sense of what I like to listen to (read: melancholic psych folk), and further, had it not been for my trust in her taste and recommendations after consistently enjoying the music she plays. Pitchfork apparently adored the shit out of this album back in 2001, and although the reviews on that site cause eyerolls so dramatic they hurt I have to agree with their glowing praise. It's a fucking great one. |
