Alpine - A Is For Alpine (2013)

An album like this is the reason I don't mind sifting through what seem like endless forgettable indie albums. I had never heard of these guys...it was more or less a random pick, but I can safely say I'll be listening to this quite a bit. To give you an idea of their sound - I could have sworn they were from Scandinavia. Scandinavians that knew how to make a very catchy indie pop song. Turns out they are from Australia. While I can try to pick out highlights from this album, I can safely say this album is good from start to finish. They explore a sound that's first impression is that it can easily become stale, but they are able to mine that sound for consistently catchy and interesting songs. They know how to give a song just enough crunch to keep it interesting right when you might start to get tired of a particular hook...and they really like their hooks. Nearly every song has something to offer, which is impressive for a pop album. And it definitely is a pop album. It's definitely worth checking out.

I'll just go ahead and say the first video is probably NSFW...but definitely interesting...

I like seeing some Kelpe love. :thumb: I tubed it to a neighborhood on the outskirts of London when I was there a few years ago, very intimate crowd and he had the live drummer with him. Awesome sound. Unfortunately no live drums on his latest album, but then again he didn't have any on his debut either. Just albums 2 and 3.

V/A - Mirror To The Soul: Caribbean Jump Up, Mambo & Calypso Beat 1954 to 1972

2 cd set of (mostly) percussion heavy tracks by artists from Cuba, Colombia, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Trinidad, St Thomas, etc. Soulful & jazz-tinged, this is easily one of the best collections yet on the Soul Jazz label. The set comes with a near 2 hr documentary on a region free dvd made up of newsreels from 1920-early 1970s of the Caribbean region (my favorite clips are the musical performances as well as a Haiti reel on voodoo). Extremely highly recommended to anyone who loves this kind of music.

Quebec is my favorite Ween album, followed closely by their classic Chocolate and Cheese. I love how they can be very tongue in cheek and then bust out with quite serious sounding and personal songs.

Many greats there, I like "The Argus" and "Happy Colored Marbles"...and they're worlds apart in terms of style.

Tex Perkins & The Dark Horses (2011)

Perkins may be better known for his days in the Australian garage/blues-rock band, the Beasts of Bourbon. Here the music is more roots rock with a sound that would have blended well with certain Paisley Underground bands (Green On Red, Dream Syndicate). The songs tackle murder, infidelity, drugs & various forms of violence (Johnny Cash might have loved this album) though not every track is down & moody. Favorite songs are many but I'll list "Life Gets In The Way", "You Haunt Me", "Getting Away With It" and especially "Necessary Evil" in the top tier. This is definitely an album I'll be coming back to again & again.

The Builders and the Butchers - Western Medicine (2013)

This is really starting to grow on me, so I'm thinking I was just not in the mood for music when I first listened to it. I've always liked this band, at least after their first album, but I was worried they had peaked with their 2009 album Salvation Is A Deep Dark Well, because their next two albums just weren't quite as good or memorable. I might have to revisit them to see if I missed some diamonds, but in the mean time I'm going to be listening to Western Medicine because god damn it is good.

If you're looking for some good Americana/folk music then I would highly recommend this, a great mixture of Appalachian, country, bluegrass, and folk.

Certainly is a grower.
