Covering Smiths songs is always going to end in tears for me. I'll tell you what though, that cover of There Is A Light on that Rough Trade comp wasn't too bad!

Heh. That one really stands out for me as one of the Smiths covers that truly fails the most in every single way. I dont think I have heard a cover of a Smiths song I prefer over the original but some of the other Smiths covers I've heard arent up to scratch but do have some redeeming qualities, I'm thinking of mainly Placebo and Muse. I like Jeff Buckleys cover of I Know Its Over but that one just has nothing going for it.
I have remembered that I've heard the Hundred Reasons one before. It was released as a single or at least the video was circulated on MTV2 and the likes. It wasnt very good. |

Ahh i do like Jeff Buckley's cover and the way it ties back into Hallelujah, beautiful. I forget the name of the band but there's quite a nice cover of Please Please Please at the end of This Is England. Apart from them i'm struggling.

million dead and hundred reasons were all out of that kind of poppy hardcore (?) boom that happened like early noughties. I've got a Million Dead CD sitting around without a box for some reason...
the Smiths shouldn't be covered ever unless you have a working knowledge of the twelve-string. they used 'how soon is now' for Charmed, that show was terrible. Like buffy the vampire slayer but worse. it's all enough to make the bile rise in your throat really |

Theres a Buckley cover that isnt a part of a medley with Hallelujah but yes, the way he tied it into Hallelujah at times was really good. Noel Gallaghers cover of There Is A Light...was alright too. However if you are lucky enough to have never heard Chris Martin sing Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before then I'd suggest keeping it that way.
Oh and the version of Please Please Please on This Is England was by Clayhill. |

Cane and Able - S/T Man, this is some great funky stuff from France. Although half of it is actually covers, this is how imo, funkadelic's Maggot brain should have sounded like (save for the title track alone). They do this psychedelic guitar-effects funky sort of thing quite well. It's a bit sloppy at times, but that's actually a good thing. Only downside being the audio quality . But hey, those killer horns make up for it . |
