Skalpel - Skalpel

Nu-jazz, sample, electronic, down beat

The polish duo heavily borrow from 60's onwards polish jazz during their samples, and the result is pretty good. I quite like it, a solid album, and will probably grow on me. My favourite tracks are 'Break In' and 'High'.

High

Break In

This is without a doubt THE best album to come out of the modern day Neo-Prog scene in two decades. The production, vocals, instrumental interplay, etc. are, like the artwork suggests, full of awesome cold/icy-ness that gives each and every track an interesting feel. Highly recommended.

You convinced me to download it, and it is really good. Although, I don't really hear what you were talking about with the cold/icy-ness comment, most of the music sounds warm and energetic.

I like the sound of that myself. Definitely worth a go then?

Excellent stuff. Reminds me a little of Thievery Corporation. This and the other album (dream pop type of thing) I mentioned a few pages back would be very welcome :D

Yeah it's very enjoyable, but I'm not quite as amped about it as Anteater. The guitar in a lot of places doesn't create a real emotional engagement with me. Of course I've only given it one full listen so far...

I'm not super amped about it or anything, I just find it a refreshing take on contemporary prog. compared to the dozens of Pendragon and Flower Kings clones that have been popping up in the last decade. Carrying on a symphonic tradition is one thing, but when you start hearing two completely different bands sounding exactly the same....you know there's an issue.

As for my comment on the coldness; I was referring to the stark production contrasted against the music (which is rather warm/melodic as you said). :)

Made in 2003. Born in 1973. Funky ass soul jazz vibe. Fantastic (cheers demonoid)

Bob Dylan - Desire
^ I can't believe it's taken me so long to get into Dylan. Brilliant album, even if it's the only Dylan record I have. One More Cup Of Coffee's my favourite at the minute.

Elvis Costello & Burt Bacharach - Painted From Memory
^Some great music to mellow out to here. It's basically soppy chamber music for grown-ups, and bits of it are therefore pretty tacky, but a few songs are as good as any Costello's sung.

David Bowie - Heathen
^Has one too many cover songs on it, but otherwise it easily stands up with the man's best work.

Television Personailities - And Don't the Kids Just Love It
^Worth it for I Know Where Syd Barret Lives alone!
