Little Dragon - Ritual Union This didn't impress me all that much the first time around. The first time I listened to their debut, I was hooked to it. Machine Dreams took a couple listens, but I ended up loving it, too. For that reason alone, I kept giving this one chances. Damn am I glad I did. I haven't heard a grower like this for a long while. I just had that moment last night where it all clicked with me. Now my album of the year.

Peter Perret, having been very influenced by Lou Reed's thick, slurring style of singing, with the Only Ones released this pop/rock album with the catchy single "Another Girl Another Planet". I'm finding it completely removed from all that annoys me about Lou Reed and is very nice listening, and the guitar work of John Perry is very flamboyant and attention grabbing. Definately one of the best I've heard all year. It's basically Post-Hardcore/Emo, but with really cool, story-like lyrics and the occasional really pretty quiet moment. One of my favourite aspects of this album is definately the production, the guitars and vocals are almost perfectly captured, crystal clear yet filled with power. The rythm section also sounds great, with a more prominent than average bass, and drums that reinforce everything the melodies are making you feel. I'm an especially big fan of songs like King Park(the highlight of the album, and the first song I heard by these guys) and I See Everything, where the lyrics are just so genuinely heartbreaking that it's hard to hate the songs. Anyways, great album. Check it out y'all. |
