Highly enjoyable 80's pop-styled album, with some great songs and an enjoyable attention to period detail. Not as good as some make it out to be but still a good record.

James Blake - S/T (2011)

Dubstep meets Blue-Eyed Soul, and such a meeting of ideas is quite interesting to say the least. It has the makings of a classic...but I'm probably jumping the gun a bit.

My goodness you can't turn on the radio overhere without hearing that song of his.
I really don't like it. It's just some words, a piano and some freaky bass line.
It's not really music to my ears, but probably that's just me :)

Dessa - Badly Broken Code

Dessa is a member of the Doomtree collective, and put out this solo album in January 2010. Someone here started a thread on her and I decided to check out the album. Didn't really take to it at first, but here lately I've been in a bit of a hip-hop mood and gave it another go. I just didn't realize the first time I listened to this album how impressive it is lyrically. And I love how she goes from spoken word to singing so effortlessly.

Thelonious Monk - Monk's Dream

Monk's playing style was really ahead of his time, well ahead of any time for that matter. It's also interesting noting clear Ellington influences, despite the fact that his playing style is so different. The same goes for Mingus too. In many ways, it seems like the bepop style that Monk and Mingus worked off of was the result of taking Ellington's ideas and bringing them to a small group, seeing what new ideas would come out of the mix, like scientists putting a different enzyme into the same substrate (I think).

Explosions in the Sky - How Strange, Innocence
Pretty good Post-Rock album. It is pretty generic, and it does drag on a bit, but A Song for Our Fathers and Time Stops are such great songs. Very nice relaxing album all in all.
