The The - Soul Mining

I first played it a few weeks ago and there was something good about it the first time, one song in particular stood out - I think it was "Giant" - as I was sitting on a bench by the water, midway through a lunchtime walk. I played it a second time last Saturday, and a third this morning. Aside from maybe one dud and two songs that otherwise haven't moved me one way or another, I find it really solid. "This Is the Day" is excellent, "Uncertain Smile", "Soul Mining", "Giant" and "Perfect" are really great as well. I think the album kind of caught me off guard...when I first investigated it, I assumed it was going to be kind of depressing and dark post-punk. And maybe the lyrics are, I haven't paid that close attention to them. But it's a lot more synth-y than I had imagined - and a little bit goth- yet somewhat upbeat. I can imagine several of these tracks being played at an 80s night in a goth/underground club. It's possible I'd heard some of these songs in such an environment during the 90s. Anyway...I'll be exploring more The The in the near future but I have a feeling others won't top this one. |
Swirlies - They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days in the Glittering World of the Salons

A few members here are responsible for my downloading of this earlier in the year (namely duga and jackhammer I think) and I finally got around to listening to it yesterday - playing it again now. Very good 90s college rock reminiscent of early Smashing Pumpkins, some My Blood Valentine (though I'm not well versed in their stuff), and the more melodic, less abrasive Sonic Youth. Yesterday I was also reminded of Silversun Pickups quite a bit, though I haven't noticed it as much today. Kind of gave me the impression that they were a big influence on their sound (along with the Pumpkins, of course). I'm reminded of another 90s band but I still can't put my finger on who it is...been trying to think of it since yesterday. Actually, it might be Autolux. Anyway, great album! Forgot how good this album was. From Copeland's simplistic yet brilliant drumming to Sting's pre-pubescent vocals to some delicious Andy Summers guitar lines it's tops all around. This is why I was gay for The Police. Also digging this weird art I've never seen before. Never realized how bloody morbid they are, though. Even Reggatta! "So Lonely" "Hole in My Life" "Can't Stand Losing You" "Bring on the Night" "Deathwish" "The Bed's Too Big Without You". Even songs with non-threatening titles, like "Message in a Bottle" or "Truth Hits Everybody" are dark. |

Helmet completely changed with the album 'Aftertaste'.....turned very melodic and harmonious....not necessarily a bad thing...just not the same....i prefer 'Strap It On' and 'Betty' to all their other stuff
http://www.thelineofbestfit.com/wp-c.../09/amiina.jpg Amiina - Puzzle i have to say this is really impressive....i've been a fan since seeing them open for Sigur Ros years ago....and absolutely loved their first EP....but found their album 'Kurr' to be much less desirable....but this is amazing.... whirlwinds of wonderful sound....mixing perfectly in rhythm....and most songs have vocals...very relaxing and enthralling |
