Testament - The Spitfire Collection

Been a while sice I'd listened to Testament, I don't remember it being this ****ing fantastic. This is a pretty good compilation album.

I'd never heard of this band before today when someone recommended it to me and I'm certainly digging it. I've only made my way through this one album, but I'm planning on giving the others a listen sometime. Anyway, it's some very cool stuff and right up my alley.

Breaking out another one of the old favs tonight...


...well, kinda. A few songs on it I don't like aside, I just love the laid-back, melodic feel of this - one of few albums I own that's guaranteed to chill me out no matter what.

Had a good night's worth of listening last night... played my way through some recent purchases / downloads, including...

Who here has not had the occasion where another member unsolicitedly throws an album your way by an artist that you never heard of and instantly you know what will be wearing out your speakers for a long time to come. This is a favorite of mine right from the first listen.

Cuong Wu is a Korean trumpet player, and, as is the case with most trumpet based music, it's almost a reflex to throw what he's doing here into the jazz category, but this is pure post-rock (bordering on free jazz at times). There is such an amazing dynamic energy to his playing and somehow he manages to stay far away from all of the pitfall jazz cliches that so often pigeonhole the instrument into the jazz style. Backed by bass, drums and guitar, the ensemble transitions from ambient to cacophonous noise and back again all the while maintaining a solid unshakable cohesion.

Fans of fusion, free jazz, and post-rock are almost guaranteed to love this.

I've had his 2000 release 'Bound' for a while now and always felt it was pretty boring/generic (Ergo I've never shared it). Might have to give it another spin. Though IIRC correctly Bound had a more tribal attempt at fusion.

I've never heard 'Bound', so I really don't have a basis for comparison, but I do know that the trumpet is a stubborn instrument, melodically speaking, to break out of the confines of the jazz idiom, and I think Cuong Vu does it beautifully on 'Residual'. I do know that I have a pretty short attention span even for most above par attempts at fusion, free jazz, or post-rock, so the fact that I not only can listen to this album, but actually love it really says a lot.

I really liked "Animal" when it came out so I downloaded the album, but I've put off listening to it until now. A bit angry about that, really

Listening to Wait for Me (Ambient) by Moby... something about his music lends itself well to laid back ambient listening, and it's doing a good job of getting me into a nice relaxed mood presently...

I'm going to have to look into this soon; the stuff you said was a really strong endorsement and has gotten me curious.
