Mew - No More Stories Are Told Today, I'm Sorry They Washed Away / No More Stories, The World Is Grey, I'm Tired, Let's Wash Away When this first came out a little while back, I wasn't that impressed honestly. I also went into it a bit skeptical since their bassist checked out and he added a LOT to their sound. One of the main reasons I fell in love with Mew is because the guitars sounded huge (like in the song Snow Brigade), but if you listened to it closely the guitars are actually thin and jangly. It is that distorted bass thrown in that makes everything sound massive. On first listen, the album sounded to me as if they had no clue what to do next so they just winged it by starting with a melody/beat here and there and then developed something off that. I was wrong...this one was a major grower. The urge just hit me today and I had to listen to this album again. I had a feeling for some reason today was the day this album would pay off...and man, it did. It's hard to rank Mew albums for me, but this one can hold its own with ...And the Glass Handed Kites and Frengers.

I should have been familiar with him a long time ago.. but better late than never. Though his really old stuff sounds too Breakcore oriented for my tastes. This album is more on the IDM and Ambient side of things with a dose of Jazz. |

As some of you may have noticed from a few of posts today, I'm on a Church bender
The Church - Sometime Anywhere I think this is my favourite of their albums as well (certainly of late anyway). Much more melancholic, slow and a lot less guitar-centric than you'd imagine, and with a few folk influences to spice things up. Just a shame the sound quality on my copy's so shit - sounds almost like listening to it through your neighbour's wall. I love that album. If it wasn't so bloody short it'd be in my personal top 10. |

Rosanne Cash - The List Apparently her Dad Johnny gave her a list of 100 country songs to expand her musical mind when she was a nipper, and this album contains recordings of about a dozen of those songs, including old gems like Girl From the North Country, Silver Wings and Long Black Veil. Pretty good stuff - very melodic. Not really that keen on shoegaze, but I might as well try it if you've got a link. I'm sure I think of an album for you in return too. |

The second half of this album ("Holland, 1945"-on) is one of the most powerful things I've ever listened to. I was really not expecting to enjoy this album at all, but honestly by the time it ended I was nearly in tears. And I still don't know why. I can't believe I waited this long to listen to this album, because as much as I enjoyed ITAOTS this one is 100x better. Honestly, I can't say anything about it because it makes me speechless. It's one of the finest albums I've ever heard.
