Sonic Youth - Goo

Just a brilliant album, been trying to get into this album for a while. Tinkering with them but this is the first album I've really got into. I love the distorted guitar tones. Top notch album.

Perhaps it's because it was one of the first DK albums I heard, back when my young mindset, when blindly buying an album, was "what album has the most songs for the least amount of money?". My favourites are probably 'Cesspool in Eden', 'One-Way Ticket to Pluto' and 'Do The Slag'. All in a row too.

lol, that's what I used to do too. So I would end up buying a lot of record label compilations with like 20 songs for 3 bucks. There's a lot of energy in this album. A lot of killer bass parts. Super raw sound, just like punk rock should be. If I'm listening to a prog record, I expect the exact opposite though.

Probably my favorite SY album...it's one of those things I can't put my finger on, too. The guitar tones are just great, but as far as the actual music goes....there is just something addictive about it that I can't figure out.

I wouldn't class it as addictive yet, only just started getting into the album. But time will tell, there's definitely something about the album. I find it to be top heavy though, dunno what you think but the first 6 tracks are better than the last 5.

Then again that's probably because I don't know the album top to bottom yet.. Maybe the last 5 songs will become increasingly better with each listen.

That's actually the reason it became my favorite album. The first half is some of the absolute best work Sonic Youth has ever done, and every time I wanted some SY I would remember those and stick on Goo. Being OCD about finishing an album start to finish, I of course had to listen to the second half as well. They grew on my like nothing else. You'll get there.

The second half is kind of like all of Daydream Nation for me. It took me a really long time to get into that album. I was always confused why everyone thought it was so good until one day it clicked.

I love it when that happens, you're listening to an album you don't get, but why? I think it's because deep down you're drawn to the music, even if you don't know why. And the day something clicks with an album is just brilliant. The day I clicked with Loveless was a fine day indeed. :D

I'm hoping I'll keep growing in to Sonic Youth, They aren't the most accessible band, I think it's cos of the singing or the lack of, sometimes it's just talking, which can be a bit irritating. I have an OCD of people delivered good lyrics in a good way.. But sometimes if the music is THAT good, I can be lenient to the singing after a while of getting used to it.

That's what I love about them. I have yet to meet someone who listened to something like Goo or Daydream Nation and just immediately loved it. It takes a bit of patience to kind of "understand" everything they are trying to do. If I meet someone who is a Sonic Youth fan, then I know we will probably get along musically. It says something about their love and understanding of music.

Someone who didn't have a clue would listen and say "crap, why is he/she mumbling words at me?" other people who do have a clue would say that but also add "However that guitar tone is magnificent, but meh. Not my cup of tea.." and then they'd revisit it at some point just because there's something about the music. I hope I really appreciate them. Next stop, loving Daydream nation. :D

Every summer my bf goes through this phase where he gives SY a listen and tries to convince himself that he likes some of their stuff but it never works. This summer he's actually getting into this album. I don't know what it is about this band, to me they're pretty boring, maybe that's why it takes some effort to sit through any of their albums.

 I admire his persistence. I've only ever heard bits and pieces of theirs, songs here and there. It's only been recently I decided to listen to that album, and it took about 5 listens to start to kind of like it. Few more listens to really know what it was about. If he's been trying every summer I don't think it's gonna happen for him. :( depends what type of stuff he's into though, does he like distorted riffs? If so, I dunno why he doesn't like SY
