Best album i've heard in a while. So many influences on show it's hard to pinpoint them, i'm getting tastes of MBV, Punk, Led Zeppelin, Isis, all condensed into an album that isn't going to get boring anytime soon. Heavy post-punk soundscapes interspersed with some of the most fun jams and riffs i've heard in recent times. I'm trying to work out why i haven't got round to listening to this before now.

I had heard that Boris were quite droney and unlistenable but your description sounds intriguing.

This is the only album i've got and it's a bit of a departure from their usual sound apparantly, which gets tagged as drone.
Trust me this is very listenable!

I will put it on my wishlist.

Man Man is gypsy punk (IMO). A genre I simply made up, hardly something official. They have a wild, swirling, chaotic sound. Their demeanor is vaguely dangerous, playful and edgy.

Happy Mondays - Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches : One of the defining bands of the "Madchester" (psychadelic dance-pop) scene during the Britpop era in the late-1980s/early-1990's. This album is a pop masterpiece which works as collage art...snatches of melody are lifted from a variety of sources (Patti LaBelle, The Beatles, etc), repurposed and slapped together into a weird and pretty compelling group of songs.
Favourite tracks: Loose Fit, Bob's Yer Uncle, Harmony


Honeybus - She Flies Like a Bird: The Anthology : A tour of an alternate history where the Beatles weren't the dominant pop force of the 1960s. Honeybus is one of the great, forgotten "what if?" stories. Contemporaries of the Beatles, early on, Honeybus was often seen by industry insiders as equivalent talents. Due to the fragile psyches of the band, they couldn't hold things together to create the focused studio albums and do the heavy touring necessary to become a superstar group. They did, however, release an amazing amount of quality singles, which are collected here. Peter Dello and Ray Cane were the song-writing tandem and the talent displayed doesn't make it hard to understand why they were once compared to McCartney and Lennon.

Suede - Head Music : Not their best known album, but as a huge fan of theirs, I would say it is their best. Every track is great guitar-driven powerful pop music. It has swagger and is full of memorable hooks. There's not a lot more to say about it...just great, great music. Extremely addictive. "Everything Will Flow" and "Down" are two of the best songs I've ever heard.

Caribou - Andorra : Gorgeous sonic confection. It's just layer upon layer of dreamy, shimmering melody. It's a bit like a combination of 1990s shoegaze and 1960s psychadelic pop. "Melody Day" is one of the most stunning pieces of music ever, and nearly every track approaches the level of that opener. It's obsess-worthy.

The New Order - Declaration Of War

Band put together by Ron Asheton of The Stooges and Dennis Thompson of MC5 after those bands split up. Lead singer is a dead ringer for Bon Scott. The songs range from sounding like Stooges & MC5 stuff to AC/DC like stuff with a bit of 70s trad rock thrown in. Some of the lyrics are cheesy as hell ( "We are the Rock n Roll soldiers in the war against the jive ), but it's a fun album.

Spanish retro garage rock. Not original in the slightest but I don't really care when it comes to stuff like this.

Telstar Ponies - In The Space Of A Few Minutes

Hugely under-rated band who I am surprised are not more widely liked on this forum , seeing as they mix what's now known as post rock with krautrock , folk & noise. An odd combination but they manage to pull it off.

S*M*A*S*H - S*M*A*S*H* E.P

Pre Britpop new wave of new wave which was basically just a movement of bands inspired by the Clash and didn't sell any records. The politics are totally laughable but it's done with a naive charm and energy that make it appealing. And it's good to listen to some of the stuff I used to like as an impressionable teen from time to time.

I think the easiest way to describe them is that they're very much in the vein of Tom Waits and Captain Beefheart, and truly worthy successors to that style of music. They're an amazing band and absolutely fantastic live.

Absolutely agreed. Six Demon Bag is one of the best albums of the decade.
