R.E.M - Live at the Olympia... a really nice collection of old new and in between R.E.M played live before a crowd, although they claim "it's not a show" (and there's plenty of rawness / mistakes to back that up) it seems to all gel together with the sizeable crowd and it seems like the band is having a ton of fun, along with the crowd, too...
It's kinda fun to hear them speculate about future album inclusions / non inclusions, some of which made it onto Accelerate. This is a recommended indulgence for anyone who is a fan of the band!

Violent Silence - S/T (2003) One of the most unusual and high-driven albums I've had the pleasure of enjoying in quite awhile...and not a guitar in sight! Basically, this album blends knotty 80's King Crimson-esque progressive rock with more contemporary/alternative vocals and production...along with the occasional post-punk touch led by bass, drums and some keyboards at the forefront of the mix. Interesting vocals add a neat element to the proceedings also, and overall I'm quite pleased by the stark originality this debut presents.

A sort of folk-pop recasting of the Orpheus myth in a sort of mirror-universe Depression-era dust-bowl type aesthetic. Features the dude from Bon Iver as Orpheus, Ani DiFranco as Persephone and Greg Brown as Hades, among others. I dunno, it's catching my attention pretty well and making me curious about the live show version (which is apparently quite the to-do).

^ I saw them live a few weeks ago. They put on a surprisingly energetic show for a band which I would never ordinarily care to listen to. Definitely worth it to catch them live if you can.

I say this because I saw Citizen Cope live a while ago and they blew. No energy whatsoever. |

The Future Sound Of London - Lifeforms Dug out this old, dark chillout beauty for the first time in ages. To put it mildly, I fucking love this album. So very very long (it's a double album), but the production is so brilliant that it all sounds like one huge piece of music. Sheer genius in other words. |
