Even though I really liked Smashing Pumpkins, this is one album I never warmed to. :(

Maybe it's through a lack of listening but meh, can't see what everyone see's in it as of yet.

I listen to it more often than most of their other albums these days.

It's funny - I haven't really given that album the time of day. I feel like I should love it because I love everything JAMC did and I like the idea - but I still never listen to that one. I default to Automatic and Honey's Dead when I want to lay back.

Having finished reading my latest book last night, I took the opportunity on today's morning commute to play an album with vocals, as I usually choose instrumental music to facilitate reading. Many of us have expressed our love for this album in the recent week(s) as part of the "favorite alternative rock album of 1991" thread. This was a strong contender for me but I ultimately ended up selecting RHCP's album. This one is definitely the more emotional of the two, RCHP's being more of a party album. Songs like ‘Crush’ remind me of being young, naïve and blind to the affections of certain females I was friends with. Stupid me. Several songs in the first half have this affect on me, bringing me back to a time in my life where I felt so helpless and couldn't act on my emotions. Nothing beats nostalgia, eh? A little light rain made for a great melancholy Friday morning commute.

It also made me a little sad and got me thinking about how great artists/bands almost always turn to shit at some point. Why is that? Unfortunately I think I know what it is...they were inspired and driven by their emotions at one point, then they grow up, become more financially stable, get into stable relationships, and have nothing really meaningful or emotional to write about anymore. To add to that, we as listeners are more prone to becoming emotionally attached to music at a younger age for the same reasons, plus becoming more busy and not being as attentive to the music as we were in say our high school years.

Anyway I've gone on long enough, the album has ended and I'm at work, should probably get some work done and return to my normal listening habit and put on some audio wallpaper. But it was fun breaking away from the norm and being reminded of one of the girls that got away, or rather, that I never even gave a chance beyond friendship but wish I had. :(

I know what you mean exactly. Around sophomore year of college, I started listening to ambient/electronic/instrumental stuff just so I could work and listen to music. It isn't too much of an issue, since there is some truly excellent instrumental music out there. But, as you said, it used to be all about the lyrics. It wasn't until really recently that I managed to start paying more attention to them again (and as a result finding some bands I really love).

Gish is excellent, I do agree. I really wish the Smashing Pumpkins had remained broken up, since their music (or Billy's, I should say) has definitely hit a vibe that feels like, well, there is experience behind it but it is just boring as ****. Ending with Machina/Machina II was the perfect way for them to end. It isn't too popular with most people, but I personally loved those albums a lot. There is such progression and growth in their music over the years. Should have been done.

Imperial Bedroom-Elvis Costello
Has overtaken Armed Forces as my favourite Costello.Gets better with repeated listenings and has set me on a course to listen to as much of the man as humanly possible.Also listened to this belter on the bus earlier.

They're really starting to hit peak form here, not a bad track on it and one of the Fall albums that's best listened from beginning to end.

They opened for Muse tonight, really enjoyed it so I bought the album. Need to check out their older stuff.

:thumb: Definitely a real grower that. I know I wasn't a huge fan of it when I'd first heard it. I think I've said many many times before that it's probably my favourite of the man's works now. Another album you should definitely hunt down if you like that is Spike - another joint-favourite of mine, and another one of the biggest growers out there.

It's been so long since I last listened to this I almost forgot I had it. Absolutely top album - Yes Sir No Sir, Shangri-La and She's Bought a Hat Like Princess Marina are what academics call 'where it's at'.

A yes, a wonderful, even if poorly-produced, late 90s British pop/hardcore punk album, with a few horns here and there. One of my favorite bands from the genre, though their material is a bit inconsistent and I only really like 2 of their albums, including this one. Great melodies though. There's a side project EP called Guns N' Wankers that is also great.

Galaxie 500 - On Fire

This album made the 8 o'clock train to Dublin this morning a very enjoyable experience. I was listening to this on my ipod while staring out the window of the train at the frost-covered countryside, and what an amazing experience it was. These guys might get lumped in with shoegaze or dream pop but they really do stand out on their own. They didn't give a fuck about fitting into anything, their music came straight from the heart.
