An album that I ran across looking for electronic albums years ago on bleep.com (it's on Warp records). Oddly enough it's depressive post-punk with small electronic embellishments. I come back to it periodically.
Fires in Distant Building by Gravenhurst. It's surprisingly amazing

Hospice was my favorite of 2009 for a long time.
But then I was recommended this : HOLY FREAKING BALLS. The bands name describes the music to a T. Awesome arrangements, fun lyrics, and HOOKS. EVERYWHERE. Thanks kh.

I've been listening to this quite a bit lately. A lot of the choruses are excellent singing practice, too, but some of it is still a little out of my range. The title track in particular is really fun to sing, and it has a perfect groove to it. They did really well with this album, it's a shame that they grew tired of the game. I'd love to see these guys live again.

I loved the song "Private Eye", it had such a great noir sound to it, plus the dude in it was bad ass!
Samael - The Eternal Been digging this album so much lately, such a perfect blend of electronica, industrial, and metal. |

I've long been acquainted with Tim Buckley but revisiting him I was blown away by this album. Goodbye and Hello is a crystalline folk-rock segue of the sixties, and with none of the glorification of counter-culture rubbish that goes along with most artists in this vein. I don't think it's hyperbole to say that this bests anything Nick Drake offered up.

Electric Warrior - T.Rex
I just heard this album for the first time the other day and my goodness, it was perfect. i've been listening to it over and over again since then, but i'm about to stop because the last thing i want to do is to get over it. OK Computer - Radiohead I got this on a strong recommendation from a mate of mine and, admittedly, at first i wasn't to fussed on it. but i've been listening to it hear and there and it's really starting to grow on me, like an acquired taste for fine wine. |

Re: 'Hospice', yeah one of my faves of last year too. I think 'Two' and 'Kettering' tower over the other tracks a bit but it still works well listened to as a whole. Does seem to have a "bookish" feel of unraveling like a story, which is obviously what they were after. Initially I was a bit wary of a band gauche enough to call the opening and closing tracks 'Prologue' and 'Epilogue' but they get away with it. Pretty dark subject matter, hope for his/their sakes it isn't autobiographical. |
