If Achtung Baby is U2's Kid A, then Zooropa is their Amnesiac. And I like Amnesiac more than Kid A.

Darn good analogy right there! Definitely going to have to get on a U2 and Radiohead kick now!

Hmm. I never thought of Radiohead as being the next generation's U2. That makes me kind of sad., because I totally see it.

scottsy 11-20-2009 05:25 PM

I actually kinda think that Radiohead eclipse U2 as far as quality is concerned, but that's just me.... the last four or so U2 albums have been great in places, but kinda spotty at times....

Rickenbacker 11-20-2009 05:25 PM

Something interesting happens with both bands preceding two albums (disregarding Rattle and Hum) though. I think The Bends is Radiohead's Joshua Tree, and Ok Computer is their The Unforgettable Fire. The latter albums are miles better, and infinitely more complex, but the former albums are in essence perfect pop records nonetheless.

scottsy 11-20-2009 05:28 PM

All this being said, I always thought that "All I Need" from In Rainbows sounded very U2 - esque....

loveissucide 11-20-2009 05:31 PM

I see the Radiohead/U2 analogies making sense to a point,but Radiohead's rejection of mainstream popularity post Kid A is where it all ends,considering U2 have never strayed from their mission of being huge.

@scott: Blasphemy!

Rickenbacker 11-20-2009 05:32 PM

Thom's writing is a lot more subtly beautiful than Bono's, which relies on a lot of (blech) Christian imagery and Smiths-y proclamations of love. The chorus of All I Need is beautiful, because the way Thom proclaims his love in that song is so Un-U2 that it's ironic how similar the songs are stylistically.

Hey fellas, have you ever heard of private messaging? It's this really wonderful thing that lets you have pointless conversations about overhyped and/or awful bands in the privacy of your own online home! :love:

Anyway-

Son Lux - At War With Walls and Mazes

Trip-hop, opera, low-key soul and nu-jazz freakouts are the name of the game here on this awesome release, reminding me a bit of Amon Tobin crossed with early Portishead at their most oblique and compelling. How this got lost in the woodwork is a mystery...
