I've been putting off getting into these guys for a while now. For those that don't know this is the side project of bassist Chris Wood, of Medeski, Martin, and wood, and his brother Oliver wood on slide Dobro. and acoustic guitar. The end product of the collaboration is a soulful blues that shows off elements of Van morrison and G Love and special Sauce, but really has a special endearing vibe all its own. Fantastic album, possibly my favorite acquisition so far this year. |

Yes, this is a corker, I have it on CD-R burned by a mate years ago - one side is this album and the other is 'Hard Day's Night' which is quite appropriate really. Everyone is grovelling at the altar of Bartles remasters at the moment, having spent more than two decades gagging for them and bemoaning the lack of McLennon-like inspiration in their guitar pop. The thing is Alfie were on their doorstep all along, from Mancland UK, you can trace their evolution over three (or is it four?) unrecognised albums from folky Rubbered Sole stuff to THIS, which is basically Electric Light Orchestra but without the stupid perms and disco vibe. ELO you might say were made up of Beatles-generation 60's pop alumni who really wanted to push the chart-friendly formula as far as it could go, that's the spirit this band were continuing. Progressive pop, there are a few recent groups carrying the torch, Field Music and The Week That Was being two. And these guys i came across recently Alfie have got the almost inhuman harmonies, the slightly progressive bent with an ear for a tune, the occasional tasteful horn section, bla di blah. It's all very entertaining. The album is only eleven tracks too so it doesn't outstay it's welcome. They are a classic example of those post-Britpop/turn of the millenium bands who had a few fans at the time but just got completely swept under the rug and split up in relative anonymity... but unlike say, Shack, Alfie deserve recognition - if only for this record. Also they've retained the caustic northern wit of their forefathers, which is just the icing on the cake really, EAT SOME Somebody here probably remembers this song from die album, it was their 'hit' YouTube - Alfie - People |
Yeah, I just don't really have as much time as before that I could use getting into new albums. Plus there's tons of cool stuff I'm rediscovering as a result, which is always cool.

A lot more subtle than just about everything else they've done, but it's still packed with some great, dark ambient atmospherics, terrific beats - just an all-round keeper this. Crazy! I'm digging Gish this morning. It's their best in my opinion. The whole Shoegaze/Metal thing that the Pumpkins have going on really works here. The first four tracks are really some of the Pumpkins best ever.
