The Oh Sees - Mutilator Defeated At Last

The Oh Sees can do no wrong apparently. Probably the greatest band I've discovered this year.

Suzanne Vega - Lover, Beloved: Songs from an Evening with Carson McCullers

I've actually got some pretty big praise for this album.
I've had the CD since late 2016, which is also the year it came out,
and I am still of the opinion that this is one of the very best albums of that whole year.

I love her album 99.9F° but was never that into her more folky stuff. Where does this album land on that spectrum?

They change their name every 3 - 4 albums.

EDIT: Orc is good too, but Floating Coffin is one of my favourite albums.

It's a bit varied. Some tracks feel a bit jazzy, some a bit bluesy, some are more of a singer-songwriter thing and yet some are - I guess - somewhat folky. I feel like the album is better described as a mix of very low key, moody songs and of more upbeat, fun songs. It really doesn't sound like her earlier albums, so I think you might not get what you're looking for.

What I can say is that, as someone who likes all of her albums, this one is easily in the better third of her discography as far as my opinion is concerned. If you decide to check it out, you should definitely try not to expect any specific style.

Don't forget to listen to Nails if you enjoy Thee Oh Sees so much.
