Yeah I also grew up in a red neck town where songs about beer, trucks, and screen doors were local youth anthems. I have a very low tolerance for anything twangy as a result.

Metal is another challenging one, despite how varied the genre is. There are just a lot of different aesthetics to it that I disliked, which at best are present in twos or threes on an album, and at worst, define it.

BUT again, if you listen to enough, you'll find something you love. Thank god for blackgaze. Post-rock and shoegaze was my way in.

Only release from this minimalist duo with an absolute french fox, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, on vocals. The EP is only 9 minutes long but it's f*cking awesome. It's like if the band Guerilla Toss existed in 1979.

I am for sure interested after this.

I'm also putting together RYM guides for people who think they hate hip hop, country, and metal music. I thought I hated them too, but perseverance pays off in the end.

Spam Townes van Zandt and Willie Nelson and all will fall before you in awe.

Also throw in some Steve Earle, Nanci Griffith, Dolly, Crystal Gayle, Emmylou Harris and Cash.

I don't think anyone could really get me to appreciate hip hop at this point, but my recently developed love for all things Joan Baez makes me think country is still possible. A lot of her folk songs sound somewhat country, so what's a few steps more in that direction...

Pretty good actually. Still not sure that I would return to this regularly, but the music is good. It kind of says it all about my relationship with hip hop that I would wish he was singing instead of "just" (notice my choice of words) rapping.

Maybe one of these will help?

I get you. Based off of personal experience, I think familiarity is the best way to overcome those types of expectations.
