Graeme Miller & Steve Shill - The Moomins (Finders Keepers Records)

Recently released soundtrack to the 1983 UK version of the Polish stop-motion adaptation of Tove Jansson's "Moomins", composed by two Leeds-based post-punk musicians of the time.
Honestly, this music is sort of hard to describe, but it has an "avant-folktronica" tag on last.fm and I suppose that's a pretty accurate descriptor, with tracks ranging from quaint folky melodies to ambient soundscapes to ominous tribalistic tracks with some quite IDM-like textures at times, all wrapped up pretty concisely on a below 30min release. Really among the best TV soundtracks I've heard.

Time to graduate to Bitches Brew.

Obscure 80s and 90s childrens' films have some of the greatest music.

Did you happen to catch this adaptation on TV back in the day (re-runs I would assume)? My only exposure to this series' episodes is just what I've been able to find online, but I did watch quite a bit of the 1990's Japanese cartoon as a kid, through Norwegian syndicated runs and VHS cassettes. Though I have to say, the 1980's one more accurately carries with more of weirdness and mystery of the source material, which kind of got "lost in adaptation" with the anime version.

****ing floored. Really embodies the sound that a lot of modern jazz has where it has you wondering where the rock (in this case, post-hardcore) ends and the jazz begins, with a healthy dose of electronica for good measure.

I did! But only the 1990s one, unfortunately. I also once owned one of the comic book compilations. Like you, I've mostly just seen snippets of what I can find online; I definitely agree that the 1980s one carries more of that strange magic compared to the other one. But they're all quite charming, regardless. I desperately need to get my hands on a complete collection of the original books, as well as all of Tove Jansson's early novels (especially The Summer Book!), because they're all absolute treasures (criminally underappreciated treasures!)

There are so many good Miles albums.

Kind of Blue / Jack Johnson / On The Corner / Bitches Brew / are my favorites of what I have heard.
