Joy Division's a top 20 or so all-time band for me

And hell New Order might be top 20 all-time too, and they're basically the same personnel (very different music though)

Kind of surprised you don't like the dark brooding-ness of Joy Division

I hate Ian Curtis' vocals. They're so ****ing boring. Nothing they've done comes close to "Blue Monday". But An Ideal for Living was some bombass punk.

I find them to be boring as well, for the most part. In terms of the Preoccupations comparison, I think they're much more adventurous with their sound. I'm sure the evolution of post-punk as a genre helps them with that, but they manage to do the whole brooding gothy gimmick without tiring it out.

They were a pretty sweet punk band though.

I don't listen to Joy Division as much anymore but they did play a big part in my music listening development. Wouldn't be in my top 20 artists or anything close, but still very good.

And: "Shadowplay" is their best song and this is not up for debate.

The Ascent of Everest - From This Vantage

Some damn good post-rock mixed with some classic and jazz elements. Definitely a lot different than the standard post-rock I listen to, but this is really damn good.
