Underworld - Dubnobasswithmyheadman (1994)
"Mmmm Skyscraper, I love you..." I haven't listened to this album front to back in quite some time. I'm working on a top 10 of 1994 and revisiting a few things. This album was a big influence on my musical tastes once I discovered it (which may have been in 1995). I first heard the track "Mmm Skyscaper I Love You" at my then-favorite venue in Houston (Numbers), during one of their Thursday or Friday night dance nights. The video (produced by the art/graphic design group Tomato, co-founded by Underworld's Rick Smith and Karl Hyde) was being projected on the big screen and I was enthralled by both the audio and the visuals. "Who the ****....woah..." Definitely one of their 2 excellent albums.

Man, I love Underworld...haven't listened to them in ages. I think I may stick them on for my drive home from work. I can't decide if I like dubnobasswithmyheadman or Oblivion With Bells better...but those are my top 2 of theirs for sure.

Do you go back and do top albums from every year? It's been a project of mine lately...I've done a top 25 for the past 3 years now and decided I needed to do this for as far back as I can. I figured it could form the basis of my slowly-starting vinyl collection. I'm going in chunks, so I'm doing 2000-present and then I'll probably go back and do the 90's and so on. I'm currently working on 2009.

I'm doing a weekly top 10 for each year, started with 1965 and I'm on 1994 this week. I'm doing it on another forum, we have a thread going each week where we share our lists. I also post them on Facebook for my real-life friends. :p:

I've been meaning to make RYM lists each week as well, but I never got around to it so I only have a handful of them there. Maybe I should create a journal for them here.

Wow, we should steal this idea.

So you've got 65-93 covered already? Damn, I'm nowhere near that! I gotta get to work! I also like to stay up to date on current music to keep my top 25 for this year going, so needless to say I've got a lot of music to listen to. Some years will be easier than others, obviously...but since streaming has basically opened the doors to almost everything released, I'm finding albums I never even heard of for certain years where I thought I really did my homework.

Yeah it's not easy. Each week, I compile a list of all the stuff I like from the year (basically 3.5 stars and up) and start forming a loose top 10. But I also make a list of highly-rated albums I never got around to for the year (often based on RYM's top 200-300 for each year). Anything that catches my eye really. As well as stuff I have in my collection that I never gave enough of a chance to. I don't revisit or listen to everything, of course, I'd have to quit my job and do nothing all day but listen. But I do what I can and try to make a top 10 that reflects what I feel today are my favorites. It's tough for 1990 and on because that was the start of high school for me so there's a ton of nostalgia involved. But I'm trying to make sure I still actually enjoy the albums I include in my top 10, and not just make a list of the 10 I enjoyed at the time. I include albums that have stood the test of time for me, and others I've discovered along the way that are killer. It's not easy and it does take over my life and work sometimes. It takes commitment! If I wasn't so anal I would throw something together but I want it to reflect what I think now and like I said, not make something that reflects teenage me.

Same here. I do give in to the nostalgia sometimes, though...for example, I couldn't bare to leave off System of a Down's Toxicity even though if I listened to it for the first time today, I'm not sure if I would feel the same about it. Other stuff would clearly get the axe. If I could go back in time to 8th grade me, I'd knock Chocolate Starfish and the Hotdog Flavored Water right out of my damn hands.

I did a Top 5 for every year since 1963 on RYM. Actually started adding images a few days ago but their servers messed up.

But expanding a little would be quite nice.

I hear ya. :D When I made my late 80s lists, I certainly didn't include any of the glam metal I was into at the time.

Damn, glad I finally gave this band a listen. Sick, wicked ****. So many bad words, must bang to it at some point.

I listened to that Casualties of Cool album the other day.

It is a bit boring in places but where it's good it's immense. 'Daddy' is probably the best track I've heard this year.
