Matana Roberts - Coin Coin Chapter One: Gens de Couleur Libres This 2011 album is one of the best modern free (not sure if actually free or if it just has similar syntax) jazz albums out there. Matana plays sax in a manner that you would imagine the lovechild of Ornette Coleman and Pharoah Sanders to sound, and she also sings phenomenally. At times she bursts into intense shrieking over sporadic melodies that send chills down my spine. This album has a lot of range, and it is definitely a unique listen for the invested jazz listener. |
The Neighbourhood's album I Love You is legit the best I've heard. Favorite tracks are Alleyways, Afraid, and W.D.Y.W.F.M. Their sound is different and it's between alternative and indie I'd say but you can get a sense of R&B because of their hip hop background.

Isis - Panopticon
It's definitely not a new addition to my collection by any means, but over the course of the past few months I've deemed it necessary to listen to this album in its entirety at least once a day. It's still post-metal's greatest masterpiece IMO http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...Panopticon.jpg Blue Hawaii - Untogether synth pop? Future garage? Glitch pop? all of the above? I have no idea. Great album though. http://www.soundstagedirect.com/medi...untogether.jpg Russian Circles - Memorial Keeping with my recent leanings toward post-metal, this was released earlier this month. A very--excuse the phrase, but it's appropriate-- epic sounding album. It's definitely growing on me more with each listen. http://cdn.stereogum.com/files/2013/...al-300x300.jpg American Analog Set - Know by Heart Classic indie pop/post-hardcore from Dallas. Every year or two I seem to return to this album. http://indierockfan.net/images/18161f.jpg |
A couple things I've been digging-
http://f0.bcbits.com/img/a1960454369_2.jpg Sneaking Past Dogs - sneaking past dogs (2013) Great band from my native state of Texas: they start off in a Faith No More vein musically, but bring in so many bizarre & ingenious nuances throughout the songs here that they're pretty much unclassifiable. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-E...52520Front.jpg Fields Of The Nephilim - Mourning Sun (2005) As much I enjoy the 80's/90's Nephilim classics, this particular album brings Carl McCoy's cinematic aspirations to a whole new level of immersion and craft. Think of the best material of, say, Dead Can Dance with an industrial bent and you'll have an idea of why this record absolutely kills. |
