Vijay Iyer & Mike Ladd Holding It Down: The Veterans' Dreams Project

Their latest project collects the dreams of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans put to a mix of spoken word/jazz with a bit of hip-hop. A raw, emotionally powerful album that is easily one of the year's best.

Graduation - Kanye West

Can't seem to upload a picture, this isn't by any chance his best work, but it ended his "college" trilogy pretty well.

This album ruined the rest of 2009 when I heard it.

Smile The Internet's Feel Good

I'm frothing over the new *sophomore* album Feel Good by neo-soul/funk pair The Internet. Realised this year, it's kicks more ass than 2011's Purple Naked Ladies with Sid the Kid's singing and writing skills shining through with better hooks, melodies and sexy swagger (check out Doncha to get what I mean!... as well as the YouTube vid). Also some interesting instrumental parts throughout the album which I didn't like at first, but it's certainly grown on me! Worth a listen for those lazy Sundays, with, or without your lover.

Really wanted to include an image of their album cover but it wouldn't let me :/

Have a listen!

I may have posted this once already, but i'm finally giving it a full thorough listen:

Blackfield - IV

There is a lot of great musicianship in this album, and Steven Wilson is the perfect person for it. You hear a lot of 70's and 80's classic rock influence. Very nicely produced as well. I'm diggin this a lot.

Evan Ziporyn - This Is Not a Clarinet

One of the members of one of my favourite ensembles Bang on a Can All-Stars latches onto the clarinet (forget the title ) for the entirety of this album. This album is the reinvention of the clarinet. The only comparable artist that I can think of is Colin Stetson, and that's solely for inventive approach and mastery of the instrument reaching almost (but not quite) masturbatory lengths. Ziporyn is clearly a badass with all of the trills, tongue slaps, multiphonics, and other sounds that I wasn't aware a clarinet could make. All of the tracks but three are composed by Ziporyn, while the others were composed by other members of Bang on a Can All Stars. If you like classical, woodwinds, jazz, technically proficient musicians, or music I would recommend giving this album a glance. I can't find any jewtube vids, but it's on Spotify for those users.

Erika Haase - Ligeti: Works for Piano and Cembalo

A great series of etudes and interesting compositions by Gyorgy Ligeti, a modern classical composer. The music is jumpy, explores almost the full range of the keyboard on both instruments, and Erika Haase pays great respect to the pieces by playing them impeccably. Here's a live performance on the piano and cembalo:
