I'd say Grand Prix, Bandwagonesque, Thirteen and Howdy! were all masterpieces, with their other albums all at least quite good. Fin De Seicle wasn't quite as good as I'd hoped, but the song "Generation Sex," from that album, is really, really brilliant, IMO. I'd recommend the albums Promenade and Casanova especially.

Three great pop acts that have decent cult followings in Britian but are completely under the radar here:
Prefab Sprout: Whether you think of them as the natural successors to Gershwin or merely an 80's Steely Dan, the moods their records set are incredible. Steve McQueen/Two Wheels Good is a classic slice of pure pop. XTC; Most bands are lucky to make one or two great records, and those records are usually their first. XTC have made, at the least, six great records, and most of them are from the second half of their career! No one ever accused XTC of being a traditional band. The Dream Academy: Their first album is positively hypnotic. As their name implies, their music draws you into a dream world. It's Prefab Sprout with more classical touches and less jazz. One of their best moments is a cover of Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want. The oboe makes the difference:

One more:
Air France - They're a little-known Swedish group that combines pop, balearic and magic. Their music is purely gorgeous: swirling, dreamy, layered. But it's not infused with noise like, say, shoegaze. It's clean and possesses traditional pop aesthetic. It's just amazing. Their On Trade Winds EP might be the most perfect album/EP I've ever heard (and I've listened to quite a bit). Every track is bright, evocative, lovely and full of great beats. I could write an essay on just that EP (but I won't here). They also have an album called No Way Down which is also amazing and beautiful. Suffice it to say, I like them a lot. Air France - Beach Party

Michael Franti/Spearhead Ted Leo & the Pharmacists I'm not sure how well they're known other places, but here in midwestern USA I don't really know anybody that knows them...other than people I tell.
