It's not the case that they are exceptions because they're not , it's practical business sense.
If you can find an popular independent band that sells maybe 200,000 - 300,000 then you have virtually that many sales guaranteed you budget to sell that many albums and if & when they do you make a healthy profit , anything more than that is a bonus. Compare that to making up your own boyband spending huge amounts of money on advertising to make them known , because you'll need it with them having no audience , throw in a load of songwriters , choreographers , stylists , producers that all need paying and then you hope you sell a couple of million albums to break even. Sure if it does take off you get the bigger return but the first option is the less risky.

Sigur Ros don't strike me as the kind of band who would go in for endorsement deals , but then I would imagine that nobody in the record company expects them to come out with an album that will sell millions of copies either. Which goes to prove my point , the record company will market them at a level where they can make a profit with their existing fan base.

I do love how everytime I come out with a point he ignores it.
Go on , disprove my point about how signing an established indie band with a ready made audience makes bad business sense.

I don't think Sigur Ros gives a rat ass about selling records, this is the band that released an album thats title was (), that had no lyrics just a made up "language" and didn't title any of the songs. They're either called Sigur Ros 1 or Untitled 1. The CD sleeve also had nothing in it but blank pages that were meant for you to write your thoughts on the album in. Pretentious yeah, but thats not something your average MTV fan would find appealing.

Plus bands don't get offered 'a multi million dollar' record deal.
They'll get an advance , which they have to pay back in full.

I bolded the key words.
Quote:
You originally said ALL WERE LYING FOR INDIE CRED, then you said MOST WERE then I pointed out that you'd said ALL WERE LYING FOR INDIE CRED then you AGREED THAT YOU DID SAY THAT. Do you see the contradiction? I can't think of anyway to dumb it down even more for you. |
