Anthony Green's vocals are what make Circa Survive. I love them. I could see it being something you need to listen to more often before they grow on you though.

jackhammer 12-24-2007 02:08 PM

The music got me straight away, so you may well be right. GET SOME MORE COMPS UP!

The Fall of Troy

http://i5.tinypic.com/8bhnoe8.jpg

Its hard to label these guys under any genre, so I'll just let you guys listen. Definite prog and hardcore influences. Thomas has one of the most original styles in writing his riffs. He actually has 2 instruments hes been playing longer than the guitar. He started off as a drummer and then a bassist and somehow he is the most amazing guitarist ive come across in both skill and originality. Anyways, before I just go off...Enjoy. (The songs I've put an asterix by were written when the boys were 16 and 17.)

1 - I Just Got This Symphony Goin*
2 - Ghostship Part IV
3 - Sledgehammer
4 - Whacko Jacko Steals the Elephant Man's Bones*
5 - Ex-Creations
6 - What Sound Does A Mastodon Make?*
7 - A Man. A Plan. A Canal. Panama.
8 - Tom Waits ( Demo Version )

Laces Out Dan! 01-01-2008 07:23 PM

jackhammer 01-01-2008 07:25 PM

I'm sold on CIRCA SURVIVE Scott. The vocals issue is not so much of a problem for me. I really like what they are doing.

Laces Out Dan! 01-01-2008 07:28 PM

I really like that you like what they are doing :)
They really are an amazing band, and they're only going to get better and put out more music now that Anthony Green isnt split between like 4 projects haha.

SEXUAL HARRASMENT IN THE WORKPLACE showcases his awesome guitar playing and DIRTY LOVE is a slab of funk tinged rock. Download now and enter the world of Zappa!

^ This compilation is full of win!

Laces Out Dan! 02-20-2008 10:35 PM

Glad that you like it. The Dear Hunter is such an underrated band. Casey is amazing at what he does.

Rubber 02-21-2008 04:37 PM

Circa Survive are great too, I can see how some people don't like Green's vocals though, and I've been a fan of Portugal. The Man ever since I saw them live. I got introduced to Portugal. The Man and Circle Takes the Square on the same night. Needless to say, that was a very good night for me.

Laces Out Dan! 02-21-2008 05:18 PM

yea, I can see how some people aren't a huge fan of Anthony's Vocals. But he truly is a great singer and I personally love his voice. And yea...The Dear Hunter, just a totally under appreciated band. Thanks a lot for checkin them both out.

RIVERSIDE
http://static.metal-archives.com/ima...6437_photo.jpg

This progressive Rock/Metal band hail from Poland although singer/main songwriter Mariusz Duda sings in English. If you are a fan of Porcupine Tree and need a fix of something similar then Riverside are for you. While not as technically competent or eclectic as PT, they are a good solid band who rely on Duda's emotive voice rather than any particular band members superior musicianship. If for some reason you have never heard of Porcupine Tree, then fans of latter day Pink Floyd should like what they do.

Tracklisting:
1. Beyond The Eyelids
2. Rainbow Box
3. Out Of Myself
4. Conceiving You
5. Dna Ts. Rednum or F.Rag
6. Back To The River (checkout the blatant Pink Floyd rip in the final third)
7. Second Life Syndrome
8. Loose Heart
9. Artificial Smile
10. The Curtain Falls
11. Ultimate Trip
12. Before.

JOHN MARTYN
http://cache.viewimages.com/xc/71855...45704FE6840619

One of Britains national treasures. Unfortunately many of the music loving people of the UK have never heard of him. Damn shame as Martyn has one of the most distinctive and faultless voices you will ever hear. A self confessed romantic coupled with an addiction to booze creates a lost soul, seemingingly adrift since his divorce way back in 1980. Originally a folk guitarist who has encompassed the Blues, a little Physchedelia, rock , Jazz and wrapped it up in a voice that many soul artists would kill for. John Martyn is a highly revered artist in musicians circles, yet his name is barely a cult in his native U.K.

His breakthrough album Solid Air (1973) is a British classic with the title track a highly personal eulogy to his close friend Nick Drake and features possibly his greatest track I Don't Want To Know. His other revered classic is Grace And Danger (1980) which dealt specifically with his marriage break up and very rarely has an artist used an album as an emotional catharsis and been so open about it.

Martyn's music evokes the rolling hills of Scotland (his native home) while evocating a simple life of love and to be loved. An artist as important as Van Morrison and as heart wrenchingly honest as Nick Drake. I give you John Martyn.

1. Solid Air. (Solid Air 1973)
2. Wildflower. (Glasgow Walker 2000)
3. Don't Want To Know. (Solid Air 1973)
4. Lookin' On. (Grace And Danger 1980)
5. Cry Me A River (Glasgow Walker 2000)
6. Hurt In Your Heart (Grace And Danger 1980)
7. The Man In The Station (Solid Air 1973)
8. You Don't Know What Love Is (Glasgow Walker 2000)
9. Go Down Easy (On The Cobbles 2004)
10. My Creator (On The Cobbles 2004)

Minus the Bear

http://image.blog.livedoor.jp/dotlin...b/3b4cd078.jpg

Minus the Bear is Seattle based 5 piece. They mix all kinds of sounds into their music and have a very distinct sound. I cant think of one band I could use to compare them to. If you like good music, Minus the Bear should be in your Library. The music for the most part has a really upbeat feel that comes from the tone of effect of Dave's guitar. Minus the Bear is a band I can recommend to just about anyone. I think a lot of you guys on the boards would love them if you havent already heard them.

1.The Game Needed Me
2.Drilling
3.Knights
4.Pachuca Sunrise
5.Spritz!!!Spritz!!!
6.When We Escape
7.This Ain't a Surfin Movie

(Jackhammer if you've never heard these guys I know you'll love them.)

Seltzer 03-23-2008 10:22 PM

I love Minus the Bear... Planet of Ice is an excellent release and very original sounding. For those who don't know, their guitarist (Dave Knudson) was in Botch.

ProggyMan 03-23-2008 10:46 PM

Good choice with Riverside, jackhammer. They sound like In Absentia should have.

Why? I loved In Absentia.

ProggyMan 03-23-2008 11:16 PM

Sounded like ****ing Nu-Metal to me. Without the DJing I mean.

tkpb938 03-23-2008 11:19 PM

Not to me. Sure Blackest Eyes had that vibe to it, but the rest of the album quickly departs from that.

ProggyMan 03-23-2008 11:20 PM

The low-keyness creates that illusion at first, but on second listen...

tkpb938 03-24-2008 07:29 AM

Thats just splitting hairs in my opinion^

jackhammer 03-24-2008 01:19 PM

If anyone wants a compilation from someone in my collection just holler and I can sort one out. I will check out Minus The Bear too Scott.
