I prefer buying, but space restrictions at the moment are getting the better of me, so downloading it is. iTunes and eMusic are both fantastic. I try to legally download as much as possible, as I'm all for supporting music.

I split the difference, I only buy used

At least the labels don't get a penny off of that, plus I get the physical copy for much less

OK , I'd like to address something that has not been mentioned yet.

Am I the only one who see's the hypocrisy in all this bands attitudes to downloading.

When bands are unsigned and they have some demo out or some songs online they can't wait for us to hear them , spam the forum with their ad's , give out tapes or CDs to anyone who will be willing to give them a listen & generally beg you to hear their stuff.
And yet as soon as they get signed they bitch about people 'SHOCK HORROR , listening to their music for free !!!!!

So at what point does a song become a commodity that i'm 'stealing' ?

That's definitely something for new bands to think about, actually. They'll stick their music up for free to get as much exposure as possible because it's 'all about the music' and they'll use the old 'screw the record companies' line but when they're signed they see the other side of things and wonder why so many people are 'stealing' the music that they were once giving away.

I've supported local bands in the past that have changed their attitudes towards downloads in a matter of months.

I honestly can't answer that last line. I suppose it's whenever the band says so... it's interesting territory.

At the point at which their music is something more than some songs they recorded for free in a mates garage. Labels put alot of money into CD release.. Bands also do (pretty much all small bands have to pay their own recording costs). Ive known bands who have split because they lost so much money (Eden Maine are a prime example). Thats the point at which they NEED people to buy their music.
