For me it's not even an issue.
most of the band that i listen to nowadays are defunct, and have been so for large periods of time, so i don't have access to them to buy their cd's my only option is to d/l them from somewhere. |

well if you follow the analogy they have the same bottle in the back they're just handing it out in glasses.

I realize that, but if the $10 one was in a cool bottle while the free one was in red plastic glasses I would probably buy the $10 one...

I buy what makes me the happiest.
Cool bottle makes me much happier than cheap plastic cup.

I see nothing wrong with downloading. People are listening to more music now and there's more money circulating around music then ever before. The money just isn't concentrated on top 50 record sales, but spread out over different avenues. I could argue the point that record labels and that entire industry is no longer needed. Bands have a product, if not a physical product, that's in high demand and they will make money off of it, just not necessarily through record sales. And it looks like Radiohead is starting that shift. Myspace, Google, Facebook, network TV, terrestrial radio and Youtube aren't selling anything yet they're worth billions. Music itself is no longer a sellable product by itself but it does attract consumers and that is what sells. Bands just need to find a new way to condense the market place.

If I buy a cd I'm buying because of what I get. The quality of the recording, the authenticity, the artwork that is authentic, the inside notes. There is no satisfaction in downloading other than being able to say you know the album. And for sure, with some bands thats all you really want. However some bands I'm happy to spend money on just because I'd be proud to actually own the album. Stuff where the money goes, if you can justify spending $20 on an album and it's few tangible perks that you know you'll love, then it's worth it. If I could, I would happily buy.
