Fall Out Boy made it because they write great hooks. No mystery there.

Do you know what a hook is? As the name suggests it's designed to "hook" people.

Mainstream music sucks, so it only makes sense they'd play sucky music for the most part. I've never wondered why certain bands 'make it'.
