OVERRATED:
U2 - Edge's use of delay was groundbreaking, but other than that, boring. Anyone remember when U2 used to make music? Before they became Bozo's, (Errr, I mean Bono) political voice. The White Stripes- Given them a fair chance and, hate em. Really simple garage rock. Sounds like a couple of teenager's first band. Here in Canada: The Tragically Hip- A good bar band with a singer who writes great poetry, but couldn't sing his way out of a wet paper bag. UNDERRATED: Nick Drake- He is just now started to gain a small audience. He was a very talented guy as a songwritter, and his guitar playing and voice are districtive. I do, however agree with the post in the "Unpopular opinions" thread that his guitar seems to be usually out of tune. The Decemberists- These forums are the only place I've ever seen anyone who liked them. (Or heard of them) Maybe it's regional? Great band, lots of Tull influence. I love "Yankee Bayonet".

Okay, since we've Canuck-highjacked this thread for a sec-
UNDERRATED: The Rheostatics. I can't say enough about how great a band they are. Favorites of the Hip as well. I've seen them live more than 20 times and they never bore. Seen the 'Fall Nationals' (Their week as the house-band stint at the Horseshoe in Toronto every year) A band with many sides who raock hard, trip out, and even made a children's album. They also were commisioned by the NFB (National Film Board) to record a soundtrack to a film about the Group of Seven. The Hip have written some amazing stuff like 'Nautical disaster', and 'Vaccination scar' that I really like. But to me, the gems are few and far between. I totally respect anyone else's tastes though. It's your right. As to the Decemberists, I've never heard them on rock radio in Ontario. That, of course, is no statement of popularity.

You know, I think the deftones are underrated. They tend to get crap for being one of those nu-metal ****e bands but they have subtle influences from the strangest places and they utilize "atmosphere" relativly well (as I saw it on Saturday Night Wrist.) Hole in the Earth was one of the better singles to emerge from this year in my opinion.
And I honestly can't say enough good things about their drummer. I am not educated enough to say how well he plays, but he's one of a few drummers that add something to a song besides a simple beat upon which to accent the 2/4 beat. Yes, but don't go by word. I may be wrong but I'm under the impression we have more vanguard stations here than most in the country. Paolo is good, despite what I'd like to say although new shoes was abhorent.

For reasons beyond my explination, everyone who focuses on their "simplicity" has an undying and godless amount of hatred for them, and despite what justice would dictate, there are quite a few of you. I personally blame it on that teenage growth period where you learn that certain songs require more skill than others and, given how we rate everything else, if one song is harder to play than the other, it must be better. The White Stripes did more to save modern music from the Nirvana-laden doldrums than we realize and so if you're claiming to like anyone with a modicom or artistic integrity, you should thank the White Stripes for even hearing about them. They single handedly rustled up the fallow earth and made scenes across the country ripe for adventourousness (sp?) again.
