Because I keep having this feeling I'm missing something. Because some of his songs have got some really ingenious musical inventions. And, truth be told, because the shop owner told me I am missing out on something here. 6 bucks, worth the bet. If I keep missing the point of Elliot Smith, I will just play Waltz #2

I can see why everyone likes Elliott Smith, but I can't can't into any of his stuff. I think it's mainly his voice, something about it bugs me. Well, I'm not going to force myself to enjoy something. *expects massive ****storm*

I wouldn't expect everyone to like him.
The only times I get upset are when people say completely prejudicial and insidious things about him as a person. I remember talking to my philosophy teacher about his work (we were doing a section on Kierkegaard), and when I was trying to explain what kind of music he played, some pretentious cunt interrupted our conversation and said "he's the original emo kid."

I quite like From a Basement on the hill and Figure 8, but I can understand entirely why he wouldn't be everyone's thing - I definitely find him too whiny and a little repetitive at times, which is why I stick to the two albums :P
Overrated? Potentially. I'd say he's overrated in the same way that The Arcade Fire are overrated - both have their hardcore group of undying fans who believe them to be the greatest thing since the thing that sliced bread was the greatest thing since, but that doesn't mean that they aren't deserving of most of the praise they get. That is to say: probably overrated, yes, but that doesn't mean that he wasn't a notable musician.
