Now as far as the kinks go they are very underrated...and you must not of heard face to face, something else, village green preservation society, arthur, lola versus the powerman :/

The Doors are over-rated though i love them.
nobody underrates the 60s Kinks - everybody praises that period

now, 70s Kinks - that's underrated - some terrific songs there, even if most albums were patchy

I just generally like Joe Satriani's upbeat sounds a lot more than Steve Vai's technical, experimental styles. And that's not to mention that Joe Satriani does do his fair share of experimentation with different styles as well...even though some of them turn out to be rather mediocre (Yes; I'm looking at you, Engines of Creation.)

Oh well, I tend to lean far more to the experimental end of music (my username being a Captain Beefheart song should be a good hint as to my musical taste). Upbeat music is generally not my flavour, but I love experimental music to no end; Steve Vai--fresh from the cradling arms of Frank Zappa--has a lot of brilliant experimental moments in his music and he edges out Satriani for me because of that. Both are phenomenal guitarists and kick my ass at the instrument, but Vai is far better and less cliched in my opinion. But to each his own, I guess.

The Kinks were a good band. However it is now seemingly very fashionable to look back in retrospect and suggest they were the "forgotten" band of the 60's and that they were on par with The Beatles, Stones and The Who.

I believe that the general assessment of the band in the 60's/70's was spot on - A good band with a talented songwriter, but clearly a class below the big 3. Perhaps the band suffered from the fact that it had no real counterweight to Ray?

I am not a great fan of Face to Face or Arthur. In fact Arthur (with the exception of Victoria) is rubbish in my view. Of all the Kinks albums I have heard, Village Green is the best overall and just about keeps itself together. However, the first half is far superior to the second. Lola is solid enough, but outside the title track is nothing special.

they aren't on the same level as the beatles imo nobody is and nobody will be but the kinks are very slept on they are'nt mentioned with the greats of the 60's (beatles, stones, who, beach boys, pink floyd)...at first i only liked them because of you really got me..but as i listened to their music more and more i grew fond of their sophisticated british sound ..
