I've never seen anyone EVER call Zooropa a good album let alone U2's best. Generally speaking Rattle and Hum or The Joshua Tree are the albums to check out.

Though I suppose it depends on whether or not you prefer an album that would feature a single that sounds like this:

as compared to something that sounds more like this:

<-- EVERYONE ONE SHOULD CHECK OUT THIS CLIP!

Having said that I cannot stand U2 but still... Zooropa?

Why though? Sell me on Zooropa. I remember when it came out back in the day. We couldn't stop laughing and ridiculing the whole '....llllllLLLLEEEmmmoooonnn!' thing. It sounded like the ultimate shark jumping record, just a bunch of thought provoking rock dudes all of a sudden switching onto the alternative electro thing that was just starting to establish itself in the underground.

What originally set them apart wasn't an avant garde approach to pop music it was the thought provoking nature of their music and the intensity within which they presented it. So why did they feel it necessary to change styles so dramatically?

Count me as one of those music geeks who agrees with you. Joshua Tree is their best album but Zooropa is by far their most underrated. I would say it's tied for second place with Achtung Baby for me. Rattle and Hum, since it was mentioned, is by far their most overrated album.

All of the sudden? Zooropa was very much the next logical step from the sound of Achtung Baby and was in fact written while they were on a break from touring for that album. It's clearly influenced by their collaboration with Emergency Broadcast Network during the Zoo TV tour, which I think is pretty neat, and is probably the album of theirs on which Brian Eno's presence is most noticeable, no doubt one of the reasons I like it so much. Also, the fact that they didn't seem to be taking themselves super-seriously anymore has always been a big plus for me.

@clancy

I work with a guy who seen them during their biggest tour or something and he was a massive U2 fan back in the day. He said they were terrible and wouldn't waste his money on another gig.

The only redeeming music on Zooropa was Stay, thats an outstanding song. I really enjoyed Achtung Baby, but agree with Dave on the huge electronic sound ruining a good rock n roll band. I still find War to be their best effort, probably with Unforgettable Fire pulling in second ahead of Joshua Tree. I find myself liking October better then Zooropa also. It was a huge chance thinking their new sound would appeal to all audience bases.

they already were thought to have jumped the shark with Achtung Baby

for me, Zooropa was a more realised version of that

it is innovative, the songwriting excellent, and only had 2 fillers at best (the 2 before the Cash collab)

FYI, i dislike The Joshua Tree intensely - repetitive and monotonous

The Joshua Tree is a very overrated album. "I Still Haven't Found..." sums up why.

John Mayer is overrated, as is that Skrillex guy. How the **** he ever got a grammy nomination is beyond me, then again, the Grammys are overrated as well.
