the big problem with RYM is that the website is FLOODED with prog and metal fanboys. it's clear from all the top 100 lists from a certain point in time onwards that there is a ridiculous, ABSURD bias in favour of REALLY niche varieties of metal (including the most extreme types of metal) and silly little nu-prog records firmly rooted in the early 70s with virtually nothing to offer the modern musical landscape.

I don't use RYM for reco's though at all. It's handy to keep track and create my own lists from etc.

Yeah , I had an idea to do something a while back and I figured their top 100 lists might be a good thing to base it on thinking it would be more diverse than most other sites. I looked at one top 100 (2003 I think) and the list seemed to be about 70% metal / prog / progmetal albums.

Needless to say I gave up.

That's unfair, there's just a bunch of metalheads who come on and rate a bunch of **** 5 stars and .5 stars which skews the ratings.

I actually know a few metalheads on the site and they tell me most metalheads have multiple accounts which boosts these ****tty metal albums even higher.

Yeh, especially since more ratings boost rankings.

Ratings on rym are weighted so ratings by someone with multiple accounts, unless all their accounts are highly weighted won't do much so the top albums is pretty reflective of the rym community.
