Best Mainstream Bands Today

Let's face it, mainstream music sucks today. Who are your favorites amongst the piles garbage like Akon and Chingy and Nickelback etc. ?

joyboyo53 07-27-2007 08:06 AM

pearl jam, red hot chili peppers, rage against the machine, incubus, modest mouse, white stripes, the strokes, tool, weezer.... many others

MHDTV 07-27-2007 03:39 PM

You mean their overall body of work(Chili Peppers), or what they're making right now(Maroon 5, my recently aqquired guilty pleasure)?

Laces Out Dan! 07-27-2007 05:46 PM

Weezer, Alexisonfire.

Jonz 07-27-2007 07:04 PM

Snow Patrol.

Not garbage, but slowly loosing interest in their music (newer stuff anyway).

Depends on how you define mainstream.

I hate most of todays mainstream radio stuff. But I hate emo and indie a tad more.

I'd endure Nickelback over Broken Social Scene, probably.

Son of JayJamJah 07-27-2007 07:56 PM

I too am ashamed to admit I listen to Maroon 5, so I won't. Oops

Thirded

I don't mind The Fray either :o:

Bane of your existence 07-28-2007 02:44 AM

The Fray are sweet. I hear the Artic Monkeys are finally getting some recognition too. Aaaaand White Stripes.

TrampInaTux 07-28-2007 07:10 AM

White Stripes newer stuff pisses me off. Icky Thump is a bit too self indulgent for my liking.

I don't know what we mean by mainstream here... but I'll put down kasabian, radiohead and the strokes as my current faves. Even though the latter two haven't done anything in a while.

boo boo 07-28-2007 07:42 AM

The Fray annoy the living bejeezus out of me.

:yikes: ! that is a really really awful thing to say.

@MHDTV
i like what they have done and the past and i personally did enjoy stadium arcadium. they each offer soemthing seperately. i love me some funky bass lines.

anticipation 07-28-2007 11:32 AM

Shop Boyz.

jackhammer 07-28-2007 06:06 PM

Crowded House are still a perennial favourite of mine, and make consistently good mainstream music.

Inuzuka Skysword 07-28-2007 06:19 PM

Radiohead, Tool, RATM, APC, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and that's about all.

Oh, it's enjoyable, and Rick Rubin does a great job letting rock's best modern rhythm section do their thing, but it's just so indistinctive. Michael Balzary+Chad Smith=Awsomeness incarnate.

The Dave 07-28-2007 06:57 PM

Modest Mouse, Muse, Hello Goodbye...... not sure of any others.

adidasss 07-29-2007 03:14 AM

When did Modest Mouse become a mainstream band?

boo boo 07-29-2007 03:22 AM

Well, Float On did top the billboard charts for a while.

See? I didn't bash them this time. :D

adidasss 07-29-2007 03:46 AM

That's odd...I haven't had a chance to listen to the properly, but from what I heard, they don't have a very accessible, mainstream sound. :-/

Sound Devastation 07-29-2007 01:08 PM

at work i have the choice of any big indie-pop album released in the past yecr.. if i have the choice i'll choose Kasabian (i like the dirtyness) or The Fratellis (i like the punk influence) as theyre just more interesting than the rest...

There was another one too, Ocean Air Breathes Salty I think. I'm pretty sure Dashboard did well, if not it gets alot of play on the local alternative rock station.

Yeah Dashboard has made them mainstream.

Both of these albums became tiresome very quickly, especially THE FRATELLIS. The KASABIAN album has a couple of good tracks, STUNTMAN is awesome, but it has faded off my radar very quickly.

beth07 07-29-2007 04:43 PM

i agree with fratellis and kasabian. also arctic monkeys, dirty pretty things have become a bit mainstream along with the strokes and the enemy :)

jackhammer 07-29-2007 05:03 PM

I will disagree with ARCTIC MONKEYS, they are much more than just music, I think that they have the potential to be one of the greatest British bands ever, on the virtue that they are quintessentially British, use their own accents, and introduce (within their lyrics) that self effacing humour that has been sadly lacking in British music.

joyboyo53 07-29-2007 05:11 PM

^::slaps self::

i cant believe i forgot arctic monkeys. those guys are amazing.

edit - jackhammer i agree 100%. i think they are probably the most solid band out of anywhere to come out over the last 10 years

TrampInaTux 07-29-2007 05:29 PM

Round here if you admit that you're a fratellis fan you will get shot.

Arctic Monkeys second album is a slight disappointment. It doesn't contain the pure energy the first album contained-even though, admittedly, it DOES have a few stronger potential singles. Unlike their debut, where all the songs sounded a lot like each other.

GravitySlips 07-29-2007 05:51 PM

I like Klaxons

them.

Son of JayJamJah 07-29-2007 06:51 PM

Alright, now I am confused. I've listened to the Atric Monkeys and they seem to lack three things: 1) Talent 2) Appeal 3) Ability to make a song I don't hate within 90 seconds.

Explain to me why I should give them another try, Jackhammer and jgd85 both have opinions on music I find solid and informed, but I don;t get that band.

TrampInaTux 08-01-2007 12:33 PM

If you don't like them then don't give them another try. They aren't THAT amazing that you should force yourself to listen to them.

joyboyo53 08-01-2007 12:38 PM

hmmm i would have to say the thing i find most appealing about them is the pseudo comical relatively deep and fully developed lyrics. they have a very powerful sound, and don't sound so much like other people as they do themselves. it is hard to always pick up on and like a band, it can depend on your mood that day and what music you feel like listening to. i usually give most albums i d/l at least 2 listens through before labeling them as trash.

remember, to make great music you don't always have to be incredibly technically talented... the beatles and nirvana come to mind.

The reason I personally like ARCTIC MONKEYS, is that they sing in their regional accents, so they are not trying to be commercial. If people like them, great, but if not; I don't think they are bothered. The lyrics are quintessentially English in humour and style. They are carrying on a great tradition of great British lyricists like Ray Davies and Ian Dury.

They refused to play Live earth, saying it was hypocritical. They try to be as low key as possible. Songs without choruses, gigs under false names etc.

They are one of the tightest bands you will hear live.

I can understand people not getting into them though. They not exactly an acquired taste, but they have a lot of haters as well as fans.

joyboyo53 08-01-2007 02:00 PM

^ they sure are good live!

Klaxons are not mainstream although they deserve to be. They remind me of 18 year old Sci-Fi freaks! Love the album though.
