Maybe you're using hyperbole, if not you're just wrong. Every similar list excludes Rakim and has both Nirvana and The Allmans held in High Regard. Also if you asked 100 people on the street 90% would rank both the Allmans and Nrivana way above Rakim.

I'll give you this, if you're asking who is more important to their genre it's Rakim hands down, but Rap music is barley a blip on the radar of Music history at this point.

Listen I love KRS-One and Blackstar. Mos Def and Kweli are some of my top 10 favs but lets be real about Rap Music's impact. Of the over 100 people I've asked about this list you're the only one to make any type of Rakim argument.

Rap music is a blip on the radar of music history?

Name one genre that has influenced the music industry more in the past 20 years.

I think he meant even though it's a mass influence on todays music, it's only had that 20 years to do so.

Grunge, Alternative Rock, Punk and many more have had a greater impact then Rap in the last twenty years. The Hip-hop culture represents a small segment of the population and is very much self contained. Similar to country music it is the extreme on the scale and thus a genre many people dismiss altogether. Look at the lists everywhere else and you'll see both Country and Rap comparatively underrepresented. If your young look at it from my perspective, about 5% of the people I know over 35 (My demographic) are aware of Rap in terms of recognizing artists. 1 in 5 of those like it. With Rap music at this point you are essentially cutting out 60% of the population and therefore it becomes a blip on the radar. It's not about quality it's quantity. Rap Music needs time. Who are the biggest three names in Rap if you asked the general public: Biggie, Pac, Eminem? How does that stack up with Stones, Beatles, Zeppelin in terms of gravitas no?

How about just the last 20 years of rock? Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, vs. Biggie, 2Pac, and Eminem.

Alternative rock, punk, and grunge. You're seriously out of your mind. Three subgenres of rock n roll, one even being a sub-sub genre, have had a greater impact on music than hip hop, a completely original style music which has spawned an entire culture out of it (or perhaps you could say visa versa)? Are you joking? You've got to be pretty desperate to list grunge, more of a movement than even a sub sub genre, which went stale in about 10 years. Punk? How has punk influenced music more in the past 20 years? You do realize that 20 years ago puts you in 87, not 77?

Like I said, you just seem a little desperate here. Whether you like it or not, to deny that it is the style of music which has had the largest impact on the music industry of the past 20 years is ludicris.

How old are you both?
There's your answer.

One of you grew up with rap.

One of you didn't.

It seems not too many older people are willing to embrace rap like other music. I can see how some older people would see rap as an unworthy invasion of "Real" music.
