I don't really understand this whole 'Nick Drake is only famous because he's dead' stuff. If that is true than why did it take over 30 years after his death for him to get any recognition? Why didn't it happen before?

The reason that Nick Drake is finding an audience is because it's only now people have been able to get hold of his albums , before that apart from a box set that came out in the late 80s his music was incredibly hard to find anywhere. The same thing happened when Led Zeppelin released their stuff on CD in the late 80s , yet nobody suggests their resurgence in popularity was due to John Bonhams death.

I never said Nick Drake was only famous because he died - I really do wish people on this forum read posts properly. I never said that - what I did say was that he is more popular than he otherwise would be, because he died. Simple pattern in music which occurs.

Sure, LZ's stuff is probably more popular than it would otherwise be, because Bonham died. But bear in mind also that he is only 1/4 of the band, so the effect probably wouldn't be as great.

I don't think whether or not he died would make much difference now, his career ran pretty similar to Vashti Bunyan's the difference is he died. Drakes more popular because he was more influential on Iron and Wine and stuff as opposed to being influence to Newsom and Banhart but the difference isn't much, he'd most likely be just as popular as he was now, probably more popular since he'd have more material.

Mmm, it's a hard call to make. I think that he'd be less popular than he is now, if he didn't die but disappeared off the face of the Earth. But he'd be more popular than he is now if he stayed alive and wrote more material. Still, it's just speculation.

I'm keen to check out Vashti Bunyan - I'm going back home today, so I'll be able to download some. :p

I wasn't referring to any post in particular , just making a general point.

Well correct me if I'm wrong but he was saying that people say "they sound like nickleback" because we're inundated with that sound, so people hearing Nevermind after Nickleback would make that assumption.

I don't know if its laughable so much as it is accurate.

Actually no it's not, Nickelback don't sound like Nirvana either.

And he was the drummer, and drummers die all the time.

It seems to me:

- You get all of your opinions from critics.

- Cannot fathom how people get any opinions dissenting to those.

- Cannot conceive of how people derive their own

- When they do, you relegate them to the work of madmen and morons with uninformed insults and a cadre of smiley face icons.

- You rarely, if ever, back up your opinions with any reasons (presumably, given the aforementioned statements because you can't make your own, or none were given to you). It just is or is not by your bearings.

- Everything you like smacks of pretension. I mean, did you really name drop Citizen Kane earlier in this thread? Why because its considered the greatest American film of all time? I'm sure you came in to weather some harsh criticism on that one.

- You hate Modest Mouse because he sings like ****, yet you claim to like Tom Waits who its evident Brock takes many a style and phrasing from. You claim to like David Bryne whom Brock probably takes the other 50% of his vocal styling from. So the two bands he's influenced by; Great. Him; shit.

Interesting Mr. Boo, I get the feeling that if this were 40 years ago you'd hate Led Zeppelin with the same amount of passion you hate Modest Mouse with, or more accurately, you'd hate Led Zep with the same amount of passion the critics did then.
